The work of Architecture is almost always the result of a negotiation between the material realities and the ancillary contingencies that are part of a more complex assembly, which often cannot corroborate the clarity of a material message. The play of tectonics is, thus, often the result of giving a bias to a conceptual grain – sometimes an idea, other times a structural or surficial phenomenon. The reconciliation of the real and perceptual plays of these phenomena forms a key part of architectural work. This lecture explores the complex layering of architectural narratives that make up the tectonic grain of various buildings.
