Ms Magogodi oaMphela Makhene
Magogodi oaMphela Makhene, a South-African writer, social entrepreneur and a speaker. Her first book, Innards, was described by The New York Times as “A gut punch… narratives that astonish.” As an Iowa Writers’ Workshop alum, Magogodi is a Caine Africa Prize, Hedgebrook, MacDowell and Rona Jaffe Award honoree. She leads immersive courses and experiences at Love As A Kind of Cure, a social enterprise she co-founded to dismantle white supremacy. She’s spoken at leading organizations like Unilever, MasterCard, The BBC, Washington Post and United Nations.

In this talk, Magogodi oaMphela Makhene considers what it means to dream and write in a language once used to colonize her ancestors, a language still used to alienate across caste and class. She tells the story of how she found liberation through language and how language offers us a powerful path back to love.
