Professor Lewis 曾在电脑科学领域出版多本着作及发表文章。他自1974年加入哈佛大学，协助数以千计的电脑科学本科毕业生发展事业。他的着作—《失去灵魂的卓越：哈佛如何忘却其教育宗旨?》曾登上《波士顿环球报》畅销书排行榜，《波士顿环球报》及《华尔街日报》均对其着作作出高度评价。

All general education programs in U.S. universities fill a void left when moral education, once the considered at the core of a liberal education, faded as univesrities became secular, and as the classical curriculum collapsed under pressure for vocational and pre-professional training. In the specifics of its mission and methods, however, general education has been re-invented several times over the past hundred years in response to the social conditions of the day. Some Gen Ed programs were meant to inspire changes in secondary education as well. Drawing on lessons from history about why the various general education programs lost their momentum, I will describe what goals are achievable today and what approaches are now workable in secondary schools and universities.
