Hospitals nowadays are admitted mainly with very old patients. Many of these patients are frail and admitted for multiple medical problems. As people age, there is a gradual decline in muscle strength as well as cognitive and sensory functions. This poses considerable challenges to the design of healthcare facilities with the aim of creating a built environment that is conducive to healing and patient safety. The Institute of Ageing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has identified 10 focus areas in establishing a built environment leading to elderly wellbeing. This lecture will illustrate how age-friendly design is incorporated in the CUHK Medical Centre.
