“How do I succeed in the study of law?” This is one of the most repeated and heartfelt questions a law student is likely to ask himself, his teachers, and his classmates. Indeed, it may become more urgent with the passage of time and the accumulation of (not always satisfying) academic results.

The answer usually takes the form of some ‘practical tips’ (join a study group, better time management, participate more in class, etc) and/or some bromides (don’t give up, things will improve, etc). These answers can be helpful, but they do not go to the heart of the question.

As the Greeks and Romans knew, all the qualities needed to excel in any endeavour lie locked within our unchanging human nature. These qualities are unlocked by the classical virtues. In modern times, our vision of the classical virtues has been obscured or lost by a belief that the human person is a fit subject for scientific study. This has resulted in a parade of educational theories, all temporarly fashionable but ultimately discarded.

Professor Stephen Hall will introduce you to the classical virtues, your oldest forgotten friends in the achievement of your purpose at law school.
