Four research projects from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received nearly $28 million from the 2022/23 Research Impact Fund (RIF) by the Research Grants Council (RGC), encouraging researchers to undertake impactful and translational research projects.

Professor Sham Mai-har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, said, “I am delighted that CUHK has multiple research projects awarded the RGC Research Impact Fund. We look forward to the fruitful results from these outstanding projects to create impact beyond academia, realising the University’s strategic plan to translate research into tangible benefits, and contribute to the society at large.

The four projects are “Translating microbiome, multi-omics and dietary innovations to enhance inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis and outcome”, led by Professor Ng Siew-chien, Professor, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, and Assistant Dean (Development), Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine); “Increasing the resilience to the health impacts of extreme cold weather on the older population under future climate change”, led by Professor Edward Ng Yan-yung, Yao Ling Sun Professor of Architecture, School of Architecture; “Robotic endobronchial multi-modal biopsy of pulmonary nodules”, led by Professor Ren Hongliang, Associate Professor, Department of Electronic Engineering; and “Battling sedentarism in children with special educational needs through inclusive physical activity”, led by Professor Cindy Sit Hui-ping, Chairperson, Department of Sports Science and Physical Education.

The Research Impact Fund was launched in 2017 to encourage local universities to conduct more impactful research and collaborate with stakeholders outside academia. It offers maximum grants of $10 million to each successful project, with the university or other partner providing the remaining 30% of the project cost. The duration of each project must be three to five years.
