CUHK Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change Launches ‘Eating Greener’ Exhibition
The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) launched the ‘Eating Greener’ Exhibition on 4 July 2019 (Thursday). Officiating at the launch ceremony were Professor Joseph Sung, Chairman of the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), and Mr Eric Ng, Vice-President (Administration) and University Secretary of CUHK.
Supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF), the Museum launched the two-year environmental educational programme, ECF ‘The Drama of Climate Change and a Low-carbon Future’. The ‘Eating Greener’ exhibition is one of the signature events of the programme. With the aid of infographics and art installations, the exhibition reveals how our dietary habits and climate change are closely interlinked, and promotes a low-carbon lifestyle and sustainable development.
In his welcome address, Mr Ng expressed his gratitude to the ECF for supporting the Museum to initiate a wide variety of environmental education activities. He said, ‘CUHK was the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong to implement pioneering carbon reduction measures. In 2010, in its Campus Master Plan, CUHK pledged to reduce its electricity consumption and carbon emissions. In 2013, we launched the “Love Food, Hate Waste @CUHK” education campaign to reduce food waste and to promote a plant-based, low-carbon diet. We also installed food waste composters to turn meal leftovers into organic compost for greening our campus.’ Mr Ng said he firmly believes that the participation of CUHK members will help inspire and motivate the general public to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.
Professor Sung said, ‘The objectives of the ECC are to raise public awareness of environmental conservation and to encourage positive changes in attitudes and behaviour through a variety of promotional and educational programmes, creating a transformative and sustainable impact on society. Through these activities, the committee aims to motivate the public to engage in carbon-reduction action to combat climate change and address other environmental problems.’ Professor Sung added that this new exhibition will enhance visitors’ understanding of low-carbon living and stimulate them to take personal steps to support environmental protection.

Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change
The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (the Museum), funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (the Trust), was established in December 2013 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is the first museum of its kind in the world, offering an interactive, multimedia exhibition that showcases valuable collections and information about climate change. It is the ideal venue for the public, especially students and teachers, to champion the cause of environmental stewardship and keep themselves abreast of the latest developments in environmental conservation and sustainability. The Museum has attracted more than 440,000 visitors since its inception.
In 2017 the Trust pledged its support for the three-year action-oriented programme, ‘JC–CUHK Climate Action’. The Museum is undertaking a range of environmental education activities to help the people of Hong Kong better understand the potentially devastating effects of climate change and to encourage them to propose innovative solutions and take positive action to meet this threat.
