The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its Seventeenth Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony today (14 May) on campus. At the Ceremony, Dr. Norman N.P. LEUNG, Chairman of the Council conferred honorary fellowships on the following five distinguished persons, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the University and the community.

Dr. CHAN Chi-sun

Dr. CHAN Chi-sun is a distinguished entrepreneur and alumnus of CUHK. He joined the shipping industry after graduation and became the Founder and Chairman of the Fordpointer Shipping Company Limited, established in 1985. Dr. Chan has always been enthusiastic about serving society. He has served as a manager of primary and secondary schools, a board member of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Chairman of the Kowloon Bowling Green Club. Dr. Chan has actively participated in alumni services and has provided generous support to the development of CUHK. He served as Chairman of CUHK New Asia College Alumni Association between 2009 and 2013 and was elected Chairman of CUHK Convocation in 2011 and a University Council member until 2017. He has also made generous donations to nurture students and improve teachers’ welfare, including establishing the “Mr. Chan Che Ho Memorial Scholarships”, spearheading the formation of the “1972 Alumni Scholarships” and the “New Asia Alumni Association (2011-13 Committee) Scholarships”, and sponsoring the “New Asia Student Exchange Programme”. The “Mr. Chan Chi-sun Chinese Culture Fund”, established with Dr. Chan’s donation, has endowed the New Asia College to annually invite distinguished scholars to deliver a series of public lectures exploring topics on Chinese history and culture. In 2009, Dr. Chan received an Honorary Fellowship from The Canadian Chartered Institute of Business Administration and an Honorary Doctorate from Lincoln University in USA, both in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions in corporate administration.

Mr. HUI Ming

Mr. HUI Ming who arrived in Hong Kong in the late 1940s at the age of fourteen found a job as an apprentice in a glass and mirror factory. He resolutely started his own mirror business and founded Koon Wah Mirror Factory in 1957. In 1961, he joined his late brother great philanthropist Mr. HUI Hoy who had just moved in Hong Kong and his cousin Mr. KONG Wing Chung, who was a leather merchant as partners of the company. Through years of hard work, Koon Wah has finally become the leading mirror manufacturer in Hong Kong. The company bought land to building their own industrial building to meet the need of the rapid business growth. The company has subsequently invested in real estate and built a number of industrial buildings since the 1970s. It has then focused on buying land at auction to build commercial property and acquiring retail shop spaces in premier locations. The company now owns more than 100 properties. Though successful in Hong Kong, the brothers did not forget their hometown, Nanhai city in Foshan. From their generous donations, new schools and kindergartens, parks, roads, water supply and drainage facilities were built in the 1980s. They also established the “HUI Hoy & CHOW Sin Lan Charity Fund” in 2007 to support the building of the new annex of the Dali Hospital. The Nanhai city government honoured them with the “Honorary Citizenship of Nanhai” for their contributions. Mr. HIU Ming has also made significant contributions to the education sector in Hong Kong. He has provided financial support to the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Geography and Resource Management at CUHK. Various CUHK medical research in digestive diseases and cancer treatment, and academic activities have been greatly supported by the HUI’s family. 

Mr. LAW Kwok-hung

Mr. LAW Kwok-hung is the Director of Yu Wing Construction & Investment Company Limited and Tai Chow Construction & Investment Limited. Yu Wing Construction & Investment is a subsidiary of Yu Tai Hing Company Limited which focuses on property development in Hong Kong, while Yu Wing Construction has been responsible for most of the construction work.  Mr. Law has been in the construction industry for more than half century and he has built over 300 buildings. Yu Wing Construction has striven for excellence in quality and building safety.  Mr. Law takes a hands-on approach and emphasises that “effective monitoring is the core of building construction; the safety of building structures can be guaranteed with rigorous quality control. He has insisted on inspecting his construction sites every day for over a half century to communicate with staff members at all levels. He also puts safety at work as a top priority. Mr. Law has been making generous donations to CUHK to support the research and academic development of the Faculty of Medicine, and by providing grants and scholarships to students. He also supports the I.CARE Programme of CUHK by subsidising students to join a variety of social and civil engagement activities that serve the community and to promote social enterprise and corporate responsibility. He supports the University Lecture on Civility that brings world renowned scholars to give lectures at CUHK, which inspired the students as well. (Mr. Law is unable to attend the Conferment Ceremony. His fellowship will be conferred in absentia.) 

Dr. SIU Wing-tai

Dr. SIU Wing-tai is a distinguished surgeon and has contributed greatly to the development of surgical techniques in minimally invasive surgery. A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK, Dr. Siu excelled as a medical student. He always held “just wanted to be a good doctor” as his motto. He undertook practice-based research in the emerging field of minimally invasive surgery and became a leading practitioner and teacher in the field of major extension of surgical care. He has held senior positions in various professional societies, including the Presidency of the Hong Kong Society of Minimal Access Surgery and the Hong Kong Society of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, to name just a few. Dr. Siu has made important contributions to CUHK by taking a lead in the development of collective philanthropy in support of the Faculty of Medicine. He was also directly involved in the establishment of the CUHK Medical Alumni Association and has been a Council Member since its foundation and its President between 2011-14. In that capacity, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Faculty’s ‘The Buddy Programme’ which was set up to provide an ongoing mentoring and support network for medical students and young practitioners, and help cement the relationship between alumni and the Faculty. 

Dr. TAN Siu-lin

Dr. TAN Siu Lin is the Founder and Chairman of Luen Thai Group Limited and an outstanding entrepreneur and renowned philanthropist. Dr. TAN moved to the Philippines with his father, at an early age. He suffered from a series of tragedies, including a fire destroyed their business and his father died later. Despite that, he possesses great resilience and set up the Luen Thai Shipping and Trading Company in 1965, which has evolved into an intercontinental enterprise with multidisciplinary businesses. Dr. TAN embraces the principle of “Giving back to society what society has given us” and has made significant contributions to society, especially in education and poverty alleviation. He founded the “Tan Siu Lin Foundation” in Hong Kong, Saipan, Guam and Quanzhou, to support various educational, medical and social services programmes. Dr. TAN also established the “SUN Yat-sen Education and Charity Foundation” in 1998 to advocate the ideology of Mr. SUN Yat-sen by organising numerous exchanges and academic events across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Dr. TAN has been a Director of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals for many years. Over the years, he established scholarships and medical funds in CUHK. He also made generous donations to support the development of Shaw College during his term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the College. Dr. TAN received the Silver Bauhinia Star last year in recognition of his contributions to educational affairs and the whole community.
