Survey Findings on the HKSAR Government’s Popularity in September 2015Released by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK
A telephone survey was conducted from 21 to 24 September 2015 by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to study the popularity of the HKSAR Government for the month of September 2015. 762 respondents aged 18 or above were successfully interviewed, with a response rate of 40.0%. The sampling error is + or – 3.55 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
Major findings are summarized as follows:
Satisfaction towards the HKSAR Government. According to the survey, while 44.6% of the 762 respondents expressed dissatisfaction towards the HKSAR Government, 18.0% said they were satisfied and 36.5% answered ‘in-between’. The corresponding figures in August 2015 were 42.0%, 19.5%, and 36.6%. Results of September 2015 were not significantly different from those of the past month statistically.
Rating of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. The current survey showed that the performance rating of Chief Executive (with a point scale ranging from 0 to 100 while 50 as a passing mark) stood at 40.1 in average and it was 42.7 last month, but the difference between August 2015 and September 2015 was found to have no statistical significance.
Ratings of Three Secretaries. The ratings of Chief Secretary for Administration (Carrie Lam), Financial Secretary (John Tsang), and Secretary for Justice (Rimsky Yuen) in September 2015 were 54.1, 60.3, and 48.0 respectively. The corresponding figures in August 2015 were 55.7, 60.8, and 50.1. No statistically significant differences were observed in the ratings of three secretaries between August 2015 and September 2015.
Trust in the HKSAR and the Central Governments. In September 2015, 21.7% of the respondents showed trust in the HKSAR government and 32.2% expressed distrust; 44.1% answered ‘in-between’. The results of August 2015 were 25.1%, 32.8%, and 40.6% respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in trust in the HKSAR Government between August 2015 and September 2015. Concerning the level of trust in the Central Government in September 2015, while 21.5% said they trusted the Central Government, 40.6% answered the opposite; 34.4% said ‘in-between’. The respective figures in the previous month were 25.6%, 34.9%, and 36.0%. The difference between August 2015 and September 2015 was found to be statistically significant.
