Survey Findings on the HKSAR Government’s Popularity in February 2016Released by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK
A telephone survey was conducted from 19 to 24 February 2016 by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to study the popularity of the HKSAR Government for the month of February 2016. 805 respondents aged 18 or above were successfully interviewed, with a response rate of 41.6%. The sampling error is + or – 3.46 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
Major findings are summarized as follows:
Satisfaction towards the HKSAR Government. According to the current survey, 43.9% of the 805 respondents expressed dissatisfaction towards the HKSAR Government, 18.3% said they were satisfied and 36.5% answered ‘in-between’. The corresponding figures in January 2016 were 42.7%, 17.1%, and 38.7%. Results of February 2016 were not significantly different from those of the past month statistically.
Rating of Chief Executive LEUNG Chun-ying. The current survey showed that the performance rating of Chief Executive (with a point scale ranging from 0 to 100 while 50 as a passing mark) stood at 39.1 in average and it was 40.3 last month, but the difference between January 2016 and February 2016 was found to have no statistical significance.
Ratings of Three Secretaries. The ratings of Chief Secretary for Administration (Carrie LAM), Financial Secretary (John TSANG), and Secretary for Justice (Rimsky YUEN) in February 2016 were 50.8, 60.1, and 45.9 respectively. The corresponding figures in January 2016 were 51.7, 59.4, and 47.6. No statistically significant differences were observed in the ratings of three secretaries between January 2016 and February 2016.
Trust in the HKSAR and the Central Governments. In February 2016, 22.2% of the respondents showed trust in the HKSAR Government and 36.9% expressed distrust; 39.4% answered ‘in-between’. The results of January 2016 were 21.1%, 33.8%, and 43.3% respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in trust in the HKSAR Government between January 2016 and February 2016. Concerning the level of trust in the Central Government in February 2016, while 20.4% said they trusted the Central Government, 41.9% answered the opposite; 33.0% said ‘in-between’. The respective figures in the previous month were 18.7%, 41.1%, and 34.6%. The difference between January 2016 and February 2016 was also found to be statistically insignificant.
