Sixteen CUHK projects funded by 2024/25 NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme
The highest number among Hong Kong institutions
The Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong recently announced the funding results of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)/RGC Joint Research Scheme (JRS) 2024/25. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has received funding for 16 projects, surpassing the other seven University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institutions in both the number of projects and total funding amount.
CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-har said: “The 16 projects funded by JRS reflect the outstanding capabilities of CUHK researchers and our commitment to Hong Kong-China scientific collaboration. These projects include collaborations between CUHK and renowned academic institutions in mainland China, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beihang University. We will continue to strengthen collaboration with mainland and international research institutions to promote interdisciplinary and international academic exchange, helping to establish Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology hub.”
The 16 principal investigators from CUHK who received funding from the JRS are, in alphabetical order of family name: Professor Li Cheng from the School of Life Sciences, Professor Li Hongsheng from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Professor Li Lili from the Department of Clinical Oncology, Professor Li Zheng from the Department of Surgery, Professor Liang Zizhen from the School of Life Sciences, Professor Lu Xinhui from the Department of Physics, Professor Kathy Lui Oi-lan from the Department of Chemical Pathology, Professor Lyu Hairong from the Department of Chemistry, Professor Ronald Ma Ching-wan from the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Professor Ng Chi-fai from the Department of Surgery, Professor Martin Stolterfoht from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Professor Wong Hoi-ying from the Department of Statistics, Professor Raymond Yeung Wai-ho from the Department of Information Engineering, Professor Zhang Li from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Professor Zhao Hui from the School of Biomedical Sciences and Professor Zhong Silin from the School of Life Sciences.
The NSFC/RGC JRS supports research proposals jointly submitted by mainland and Hong Kong researchers that aim to promote collaboration between researchers and research teams in those two places by complementing the existing strengths of both. Each successful JRS Hong Kong applicant receives a maximum grant of HK$1.25 million, with each research project spanning four years.
