Seon1: Cultural Symbols of Chinese Landscape Painting at Oil Street Art Space showcases contemporary art that draws on traditional Chinese culture
Jointly presented by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and co-organised by CUHK Art Museum and Oil Street Art Space (Oi!), the exhibition Seon1: Cultural Symbols of Chinese Landscape Painting from the Archaic Curator Series is on display till 5 February 2023 at Oi! Glassie, showcasing contemporary art that draws on traditional Chinese culture. All members of the public are welcome. Admission is free.
Dr Phil Chan, Associate Curator of Painting and Calligraphy at the CUHK Art Museum, and also the guest curator of this exhibition, invited six local artists, Wong Hau-kwei, Ou Da-wei, Raymond Fung Wing-kee, Hung Hoi, Hung Fai and Yau Wing-fung, to recreate one or more masterpieces from the collection of the Art Museum, demonstrating the landscapes of their minds with the techniques they employ.
“Cun”, or “Seon1” in Cantonese romanisation, is a distinctive mode of expression in Chinese paintings. “Seon1”, meaning “textural stroke”, stems from painters’ observation of nature as they process what they see into brushwork that captures the construction, roughness and texture of a landscape, revealing the rendering of shadows and light. The terrains of various regions in different seasons and weather conditions at different times evoke distinct emotions in painters, who then create a fine range of textural strokes.
This exhibition will echo the theme of another exhibition, Majestic Vistas: Selected Landscape Paintings from the Collection of the Art Museum, CUHK, which runs till 5 February 2023, revealing the infinite possibilities of landscape painting in the present day. The audience can discover the charm that lingers forever in Chinese landscape paintings and enjoy a tranquil moment in front of them.
