Professor Kenneth Young Speaks at ‘The Yangtze River Forum’ at Hubei Provincial LibraryBeginning the ‘CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series’
Prof. Kenneth Young, Honorary Fellow and Emeritus Professor of Physics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) spoke at ‘The Yangtze River Forum’ at the Hubei Provincial Library on 27 May, beginning the ‘CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series’. The renowned theoretical physicist delivered a public lecture on the topic ‘The Big Bang’, attracting an audience of nearly 500. Participating students actively sought advice from Professor Young after the talk.
Professor Young shared his experience and expertise by elaborating on the classical canon including the expansion of the universe and the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). He also discussed famous scientific theories such as that of Newton’s laws, Hubble’s law and general relativity.
CUHK is a first-class comprehensive research university, composing of high-achieving faculty with cutting-edge scholarly outputs. To further cement its presence in and strengthen its ties with the Greater China region, the University’s Office of Academic Links (China) officially launched the ‘CUHK Distinguished Lecture Series’ in 2017. Every year, two to three distinguished scholars from CUHK will be invited to tour and give public lectures in various provinces and institutes in mainland China, with an aim to highlight CUHK’s excellent research achievements and share experience.
About Prof. Kenneth Young
Prof. Kenneth YOUNG is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics, CUHK and a member of the Governing Board, CUHK (Shenzhen). He was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship in 2017. He joined CUHK in 1973, and has been Chairman of the Department of Physics, Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Graduate School, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and the Founding Master of C.W. Chu College. He has made significant contributions to CUHK, including leadership in the preparation for the new curriculum for the 4-year academic structure. Professor Young was also awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award. He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1999. He has served in many positions in public service including member of the University Grants Committee, Chairman of its Research Grants Council, and Vice-President of the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies. He is currently Chairperson of the Hong Kong Curriculum Development Council and a member of the Education Commission, as well as Council Member and Vice Chairman of the Board of Adjudicators for the Shaw Prize.
