The CUHK 10K Night Challenge was successfully held last night, attracting nearly a thousand CUHK students, staff and alumni who experienced the night run together.  The Challenge was jointly organised by the Physical Education Unit (PE Unit) of the Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), HK JC Centre of Sports Medicine & Health Science, I·CARE and the Communications and Public Relations Office (CPRO).

Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK said, “It is a lively and exhilarating experience to enjoy running together with nearly a thousand CUHK alumni, staff members and students.   It is also a unique experience being able to enjoy the spectacular night scene of the New Territories and the relaxing setting of the night run.  No matter how much sports experience you have or what the results are, I very much hope you all can develop the habit of joining in sports activities regularly. This will definitely help promote the running trend in the campus and turn CUHK into a ‘Healthy Campus’.  This is because getting involved in sport can not only control weight, but can release happiness too. It builds our resilience and strengthens our will, which is one of the most valuable lessons in our lives.”

Dr. Elean Leung, Director of the PE Unit, Faculty of Education of CUHK said, “In view  of the increasingly popular trend towards running in recent years, we organised the running event together with the HK JC Centre of Sports Medicine & Health Science, I·CARE and CPRO.  The event was held successfully tonight after over a year of preparation work and with the full support from the University.  We are very much encouraged by the overwhelming response from CUHK students, staff members and alumni.”

CUHK has been striving to promote the sports culture by encouraging students to participate in sports activities to keep their body strong, create positive energy in their lives and build up a forward looking and healthy way of living.  Currently the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education from CUHK’s Faculty of Education provides degree to PhD. programmes.  All full-time year 1 undergraduates must take physical education during their first year of attendance. Students can also take physical education elective courses as well, according to their interests.  Moreover, CUHK collaborates with the Hong Kong Sports Institute by providing the Elite Athletes Study Programme.  Elite athletes under the Programme  have  more flexibility in the curriculum to better accommodate their intensive training and competition schedules, and enable them to train full-time.  The University will arrange a mentor for each of the admitted elite athletes to help them adapt to university life and support their academic work.

The CUHK 10K Night Challenge has two categories: Race Group (10K) and Health Group (4K) with Southern Piazza of Pak Shek Kok Promenade as the starting and finishing point.  Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK not only officiated at the opening ceremony of the event, but took part in and completed the race together with Prof. Edwin Chan, Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, Prof. Alvin Leung, Dean of Faculty of Education and Mr. Daniel Lee, Lecturer of the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and a former member of the Hong Kong Triathlon National Squad.  The event also served to raise fund for the I·CARE Programme to support the development of its various activities, and hence contribute to the sustainable personal growth of CUHK students.
