Mourning Yang Ti-liang

CUHK is deeply saddened by the passing away today of Yang Ti-liang, the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong. Yang Ti-liang had a deep connection with CUHK. He received the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from CUHK in 1984. He served as the first Chairman of the Executive Committee of the School of Law at CUHK in 2005, and was an Honorary Professor of Law. He was passionate about serving the higher education sector. He served as a member of the CUHK Council, and as Vice-Chairman and a member of the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College.

CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said, “Yang Ti-liang made important contributions to the development of higher education in Hong Kong. CUHK was honoured to receive his guidance and assistance in many areas over the years, especially in the development of the Faculty of Law and the cultivation of talents, for which we are truly grateful. We are saddened by his passing and express our sincere condolences to his family.”

Yang Ti-liang served as magistrate, senior magistrate, District Judge, Justice of the Supreme Court and Justice of the Court of Appeal in Hong Kong. He later became the first Chinese Chief Justice of Hong Kong, making profound contributions to the legal profession in the city.
