The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has learned with deep sorrow about the passing of Professor Tang Xiaoou of the Department of Information Engineering.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, expressed his sadness at the sudden passing of Professor Tang. He stated, “Professor Tang was an outstanding scholar and entrepreneur, and a close working partner and dear friend of mine. His untimely departure is a great loss for the University, and I am deeply saddened. Professor Tang not only achieved remarkable accomplishments in the field of artificial intelligence but also successfully translated his research into a leading unicorn enterprise in the country, inspiring countless university members and entrepreneurs, and making significant contributions to promoting a culture of research and entrepreneurship. The University mourns the loss of Professor Tang deeply and extends heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Professor Tang was devoted to the study of computer vision and deep learning. He was also one of the most influential scientists working in AI field.

Professor Tang joined CUHK’s Department of Information Engineering in 1998 and later founded the CUHK Multimedia Laboratory. He also led the laboratory’s research team and established the unicorn startup SenseTime.

Professor Tang served as the Director of the Pujiang Lab and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In 2021, he supported the establishment of the CUHK Interdisciplinary AI Research Institute. The Institute established the Shanghai Research Base at the Shanghai AI Laboratory in 2023, aiming to promote research development and innovation in AI technology and related fields.
