18 Mar 2025

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is deeply saddened by the passing of the entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr Lee Shau-kee, and conveys its sincere condolences to his family.

Professor John Chai Yat-chiu, Chairman of the CUHK Council, expressed his profound respect for Dr Lee and said: “Dr Lee has made tremendous contributions towards the promotion of Hong Kong’s economic prosperity. His enthusiastic support has also been instrumental to many major educational and cultural development projects both in Hong Kong and overseas. We have been honoured to receive Dr Lee’s longstanding support in facilitating talent development and scholarly pursuits since the early days of CUHK’s establishment.”

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, expressed his great sorrow at the loss of Dr Lee, saying: “Dr Lee devoted his life to philanthropy, making significant contributions to education. CUHK is beyond grateful for the generous donations from Dr Lee and his family to establish scholarships and support the University’s research and development. We feel profoundly beholden to them for all of this. I would like to sincerely offer our deepest condolences to Dr Lee’s family on behalf of our teachers and students.”

As a leader in the business community, Dr Lee Shau-kee consistently participated in charitable and philanthropic activities, particularly in the field of education. Over the years, he provided extensive support to CUHK, including establishing the “Lee Shau Kee Education Foundation” scholarship to assist underprivileged students and support students to join overseas exchange programmes. In recognition of Dr Lee’s long-standing support, The University named a teaching building the Lee Shau Kee Building and another comprehensive teaching building the Lee Shau Kee Architecture Building in commemoration of his generous donation.

For nearly half a century, Dr Lee provided staunch support to CUHK. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Three-year MBA Programme in 1977 and had been a Trustee of United College since 1988. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa and an Honorary Fellowship of CUHK in 1993 and 2002 respectively, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the business sector and his tremendous support for education.
