Inauguration of CUHK’s S.H. Ho Research Centre for Infectious Diseases

The S.H. Ho Research Centre for Infectious Diseases, a new research centre at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was inaugurated on 27 June 2023. The Centre will serve as a hub for CUHK’s researchers to collaborate with clinicians and health professionals locally and internationally, and develop innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges from infectious diseases in the coming years.

The S.H. Ho Research Centre for Infectious Diseases will specialise in research on hot topics including COVID-19, influenza, emerging respiratory infections, HIV and Mpox. The Centre will also focus on building capacity and contributing to improving public health practices, so as to better prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases in Hong Kong.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin. It was officiated over by Dr Ho Tzu-leung, Governor of The S.H. Ho Foundation; Professor Francis Chan, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK (CU Medicine); Professor Samuel Wong, Director of The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care; and Professor David Hui, Director of the new centre.

Dr Ho Tzu-leung, remarked, “In the last couple of years, COVID-19 has undergone a phased change. We continue to research and to treat it. The S.H. Ho Foundation and I give wholehearted support to chase this disease off, so we can overpass and control infection threats.”

Professor Francis Chan , Dean of CU Medicine, highlighted in the opening address, “We are grateful to the S.H. Ho Foundation for their generous support. The S.H. Ho Research Centre for Infectious Diseases marks an important milestone in the fight against infectious diseases through medical research and in partnership with the community. Interdisciplinary collaboration is increasingly important in the battle against infectious diseases, and this new centre will be dedicated to linking collaborative efforts in infectious disease research across disciplines.”

Professor David Hui, Director of the S.H. Ho Research Centre for Infectious Diseases, stated, “This centre will contribute significantly to a better understanding of infectious diseases and help us develop new and effective strategies for prevention, treatment and control.”
