Greater Bay Area AI for the Future Experiential Camp, cultivating students’ AI knowledge to shape the future
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and jointly organised by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the CUHK Jockey Club AI for the Future Project (the Project) held the Greater Bay Area AI for the Future Experiential Camp 2024 (the Camp) on 19 August at the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute. The camps are highly popular among schools, students and parents, attracting over a hundred local secondary students each summer. Infused with a vibrant and jubilant atmosphere, the Camp was held in Shenzhen for the first time this year, drawing over 300 teachers and students from Hong Kong and mainland cities.
With the advancement of computing, communication and sensing technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly developing, and its applications are increasingly being integrated into everyday life. Through seminars, workshops, competitions and special tasks, the Camp enables students to directly experience the potential of AI, fostering innovative thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills and team spirit. Teachers from mainland China and Hong Kong also exchanged insights on the latest developments in AI education, enhancing collaboration and driving progress in AI education across the Greater Bay Area.
Professor Anthony T.C. Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Alumni Relations and Advancement) of CUHK, officiated at the opening ceremony of the Camp, joined by other guests. He stated that CUHK and The Hong Kong Jockey Club had been collaborating to promote the CUHK Jockey Club AI for the Future Project, aiming at nurturing the younger generation as future AI innovators and leaders, working towards maximising social benefit. This year’s Camp attracted students from mainland China and Hong Kong, reflecting the collaborative development among cities in the Greater Bay Area. Professor Chan credited the smooth execution of the event to the CUHK’s longstanding efforts in Shenzhen, showcasing the crucial role of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute as a platform throughout the Greater Bay Area. The Institute looks forward to contributing further to cross-border collaboration and information exchange.
Professor Yam Yeung, Research Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK, Director of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute and Principal Investigator of CUHK Jockey Club AI for the Future Project, said: “In this digital era, the scope of AI technology applications is broadening; therefore, there is an urgent need to guide students in effectively understanding and utilising AI, empowering them to approach AI with a positive attitude. Currently, AI development is an irresistible trend and a key area that can enhance competitiveness. With frequent interactions between Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, mainland China places a strong emphasis on the development of AI education. The Camp aims to establish closer cooperative relationships with institutions in the Greater Bay Area to collectively drive forward AI education. Our aspiration is for students to establish a foothold in the AI era and master AI technology, regardless of their chosen field.”
