Eight distinguished students awarded CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) presented Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence to eight distinguished students recently, in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
At the ceremony, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said: “The Scholarship is not merely a recognition of your past achievements. More importantly, it highlights the potential each of you possesses to shape the future. I hope all of you can remain self-motivated, keep pursuing knowledge and uphold the spirit of lifelong learning. Your journey of education does not end with this Scholarship. Instead, it is a continuous process of growth and discovery. As future leaders, you are entrusted with the social responsibility to apply what you have learned to tackle the challenges faced by our society, our region, our country and humanity at large. Be it in science, technology, health, business, education or law, your contributions will surely propel our global community to keep flourishing with vitality and unity.”
Nicolas Lin Shun-heng is a year two student majoring in Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), who is interested in biology and medicine. He has joined the mentorship programme in the Global-Physician Leadership Stream, and was attached to the neurology department of Prince of Wales Hospital during the semester break to experience the mission of medical professionals. He was impressed by the wonders of neuroscience and became an executive committee member of the Hong Kong Student Association of Neuroscience. During the summer break, he was attached to Capital Medical University in Beijing for a month, rotating around different departments of the affiliated Xuanwu Hospital and gaining first-hand experience of mainland medical systems. He would like to express his gratitude to the University for awarding the scholarship as recognition and encouragement for his future studies.
Chan Man-chun, a year two LLB student, was inspired to study law by her belief in the power of diversity and inclusivity. Upon starting at CUHK, she joined her dorm’s residents’ association and was elected as its president. The experience reinforced her dedication to creating positive change within the community. She has also participated in the Model United Nations as a chairman at conferences, advocating for global cooperation, which has been invaluable in preparing her to be a lawyer dedicated to upholding justice. Looking ahead, she aspires to champion equality and respect for everyone in her future legal career and is determined to make a positive impact and contribute meaningfully to society.
The Scholarship was established in the 2021-22 academic year. A maximum of eight scholarships of HK$50,000 each are given out each year to Year one students on the basis of excellent academic achievements at entrance, academic results at CUHK, communication skills, track record of distinguished leadership and non-academic performance.
