Dr Norman Chan appointed Vice-Chairman of CUHK Council
The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has appointed Dr Norman Chan Tak-lam as Vice-Chairman for a term of two years with effect from 18 April 2023, succeeding Dr Lee Chien. The Council sincerely thanks Dr Lee for his dedication and contributions to the University over the years.
Dr Chan said, “It is my great honour to be appointed Vice-Chairman of CUHK Council and, as an alumnus of CUHK, to continue to serve my alma mater. I am grateful for the Council’s trust and support, and I look forward to working together with the Council Chairman and members to promote the University’s vigorous development.”
Dr Chan is a distinguished leader in the financial industry. He was the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) from 2009 to 2019. During this period, he was a member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) established by the G20 and has served as Chairman of the FSB’s Standing Committee on Supervisory and Regulatory Cooperation. He has also served as Vice Chairman, Asia of Standard Chartered Bank, and Director of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR’s Office. He has been the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CUHK’s Chung Chi College since August 2021 and has been diligent in promoting liberal arts education.
Dr Chan has made major contributions to society which have earned him many honours. He received Honorary Doctoral Degrees in Business Administration from the City University of Hong Kong (2020), Lingnan University (2021) and Hong Kong Shue Yan University (2022) respectively.
CUHK Council Chairman Professor John Chai Yat-chiu welcomed Dr Chan as Vice-Chairman. He said, “Dr Chan not only has rich leadership experience in the financial sector, but is also deeply committed to contributing to CUHK and the higher education sector. I look forward to cooperating with him to continuously improve the University’s governance.”
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan congratulated Dr Chan on his appointment. “Dr Chan is a distinguished alumnus of CUHK who has been very supportive to and dedicated in advancing the University’s development. We welcome Dr Chan as Vice-Chairman of the University Council and look forward to working with him in his new capacity as we advance CUHK in this special diamond jubilee year and beyond.”
