CUHK wins seven awards at the National & Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competitions – Hong Kong Regional Award Ceremony 2023
Student representatives from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received a total of seven awards at the National & Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competitions – Hong Kong Regional Award Ceremony 2023: three gold prizes, one silver prize and one bronze prize in the 9th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; a first prize in the 10th “Chuang Qing Chun” Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; and a third prize in the 18th “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest.
Director of CUHK’s Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services Professor Benny Zee said, “As a leading, comprehensive research university in Asia, CUHK has always attached great importance to contributing to the development of Hong Kong and our country through research, innovation and the cultivation of talents. The various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions at the Greater Bay Area and National level are excellent platforms for students to showcase their research outcomes and entrepreneurial ideas, laying the foundation for them to become future innovation leaders. I hope that CUHK students will continue to participate and achieve great success in future competitions.”
Mag Med Biotech Bioartificial Ligament
Gold prize in the 9th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; and first prize in the 10th “Chuang Qing Chun” Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
Leveraging years of research achievements, the Mag Med Biotech team members Zhang Haozhi, Dai Bingyang, Zhang Yuantao, An Yuanming, Chen Xin, Lei Lei and Wen Zhenkang have developed an innovative magnesium-incorporating bioactive artificial ligament, under the supervision of Professor Qin Ling, Professor Patrick Yung and Professor Xu Jiankun from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Based on reliable mechanical properties and an experimentally proven ability to promote cell adhesion and bone tissue regeneration, this product represents a significant advancement in the field.
An Intelligent Robotic System for Neurosurgery
Gold prize in the 9th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
Under the supervision of Professor Cheung Shing-shin from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering and Professor George Wong Kwok-chu from the Department of Surgery, Yan Junyan and his team members, Qiu Yufu, Chen Jibiao and Fang Haiyang from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, have introduced the world’s first flexible robot with an intelligent navigation system for neurosurgery. The robot’s end effector can avoid damaging important functional areas of the brain and achieve a level of precision superior to the average neurosurgeon.
Dexterous Multi-layer Rigid-flexible Hybrid Structure Robotic System
Gold prize in the 9th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
The project team comprising Wang Xuchen, Ng Wee-shen and Lin Hongbin has developed a series of multi-layer rigid-flexible hybrid structure robotic products that can dexterously perform difficult tasks in confined spaces, under the supervision of Professor Au Kwok-wai Samuel and Professor Ma Xin from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering. These products include minimally invasive surgical robots for narrow physiological structures in ear, nose and throat surgery, as well as industrial robots for inspection and secondary machining of aerospace components with physically inaccessible or confined spaces.
The National & Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competitions – Hong Kong Regional Award Ceremony was organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association. This year, awards were presented at the ceremony to the Hong Kong representative teams in four competitions: the 18th “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest, the 9th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the 10th “Chuang Qing Chun” Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the 6th Beijing – Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Cup.
