The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) welcomes the initiatives outlined in the 2024 Policy Address delivered by the Chief Executive, which aim to establish Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education, and a centre for innovation and technology (I&T).  These initiatives can foster the integrated development of education, technology, and talent.

A CUHK spokesperson said: “We are delighted that this year’s Policy Address introduces a variety of new measures to cultivate talent and attract international students, helping to propel Hong Kong towards becoming an international hub for post-secondary education. Initiatives such as the ‘Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies’ and the establishment of the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand, will support institutions in nurturing local talent and attracting top students from around the world. These efforts will further enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness and influence in the global higher education arena. In support of the government initiatives, CUHK is actively increasing its proportion of non-local students, fostering cross-cultural exchanges between students and enriching their multicultural experience while solidifying Hong Kong’s reputation as an ideal study destination.”

Additionally, CUHK supports various measures outlined in the Policy Address to promote the development of innovation and technology, including the establishment of the third InnoHK research cluster, a new round of the Research Matching Grant Scheme totalling HK$1.5 billion, and the setting up of an aerospace research centre.  The spokesperson added: “CUHK will leverage its educational and research strengths to collaborate with the government in advancing the innovation and technology industry ecosystem. The new measures will bring more world-class research collaboration opportunities to Hong Kong, attracting top research talent to the region. CUHK will continue to enhance its research and innovation capabilities, accelerate the transformation and application of research outcomes, and drive Hong Kong towards becoming an international I&T centre for the benefit of Hong Kong, the nation and global society.” CUHK has established six InnoHK Centres covering health, biomedicine, robotics and artificial intelligence, in collaboration with leading global universities.

The Policy Address further focuses on the government’s commitment to the “Northern Metropolis”. CUHK looks forward to working alongside the government to advance the development of the “Northern Metropolis University Town”, and extending its education and research footprint in the Northern Metropolis, fostering collaboration and exchanges with renowned world-class institutions in the region.
