Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Lee Quo Wei and Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, was elected as one of the first batch of Chinese Association of Inventions (CAI) Fellows in recognition of his distinguished achievement in innovative inventions and his contributions to CAI. Professor Tuan, the only recipient of the fellowship from Hong Kong, was bestowed the honour at the CAI Fellow certificate presentation ceremony held in tandem with The 10th International Exhibition of Invention and the 3rd World Invention and Innovation Forum that recently took place in Foshan, Guangdong Province, in mainland China.

Professor Tuan said, “I am honoured to be elected a CAI Fellow. I hope that my scientific and technological inventions can play a role in driving the development of technological innovation in CUHK and the region, and thus help to solve various problems we are facing and to benefit the world. CUHK will ride on the opportunities from the ‘Belt-and-Road’ and ‘Greater Bay Area’ initiatives to proactively nurture talent for scientific and technological innovation, and promote the invention of new techniques and knowledge transfer.”

Widely known for his expertise in skeletal tissue engineering and regeneration, Professor Tuan’s research activities cover basic science and engineering, as well as translational and clinical applications. By integrating ‘smart’ biotechnology with his stem cell research, he has successfully developed translational applications for the repair and regeneration of human tissues. He engineered the first-ever three dimensional joint-on-a-chip, called the “microJoint”, to replicate a human joint using a microbioreactor platform. The microJoint is used to study and screen for potential therapeutic agents for osteoarthritis. Professor Tuan was inducted as a Fellow into the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) in 2017 in recognition of his prolific spirit of innovation.

The CAI Fellowship is CAI’s highest level of membership. The first batch of CAI Fellows was recommended by the executive committee of CAI. CAI Fellows are elected every year and no more than 10 Fellows will be elected each time.

Among the first batch of CAI Fellows are: Professor Yuan Longping who is known as “Father of Hybrid Rice”; Dr. Yan Chorliang, principal scientist from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences; Mr. Zhou Yuantung, renowned scientist and Deputy Executive Director of CAI; and Professor Zhang Yanguo from the Department of Energy and Power Engineering, Tsinghua University in Beijing.
