CUHK to Host 6th Academia Sinica Academicians Lecture SeriesOpen for Online Registration
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will hold the sixth Academia Sinica (AS) Academicians Visit Programme and Lecture Series from 18 to 21 April 2017. Three distinguished academicians from the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences will visit CUHK for academic exchange. They will deliver public lectures and meet with CUHK representatives to discuss collaboration opportunities between the two institutions.
The visiting academicians will be Prof. Liu Tai-Ping, Distinguished Visiting Chair of the Institute of Mathematics, AS; Prof. Li Ker-Chau, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Statistical Science, AS; and Prof. Mou Chung-Yuan, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, National Taiwan University.
The scholars will visit the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Chemistry at CUHK. On 19 and 20 April, they will give three public lectures on CUHK campus to share experience and expertise in their respective fields of research. The lectures will be conducted in Mandarin, supplemented with English. Members of the public are welcome. For more information and registration, please visit: www.cuhk.edu.hk/oalc/as_2017/.
Prof. Li Ker-Chau is currently the Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Statistical Science at AS. His specialties include mathematical statistics, high dimensional data analysis and bioinformatics. He has received various academic awards including the Distinguished Achievement Award from ICSA. He is also an Academician of the World Academy of Science. His lecture, entitled ‘Liquid association for investigating complex data’, is about how to exploit the statistical notion of correlation for bettering the strategy of analytics.
Prof. Mou Chung-Yuan is currently a Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the National Taiwan University. His research areas include heterogeneous catalysis, chemistry in confined spaces, statistical mechanics and biomedical application of nanoporous materials. Professor Mou has achieved various academic awards including the Chemistry Medal from the Chinese Chemical Society and the TWAS Chemistry Award. In his lecture entitled ‘Nano-Confined Water’, he will explain the differences between confined water and normal water, as well as the physicochemical effect of water and its interaction with solutes in a crowded environment.
Prof. Liu Tai-Ping is currently the Distinguished Visiting Chair of the Institute of Mathematics at AS. His specialties include partial differential equators, shock wave theory and kinetic theory. Professor Liu has published numerous influential papers in top international academic journals. He is also an Academician of the World Academy of Science. His lecture, entitled ‘Truth and Beauty’, aims to demonstrate the saying ‘Science is about truth and art is about beauty’ by the example of Boltzmann the scientist and Chu Yuan the ancient poet from the East. These two towering figures were similar in their pursuit of beauty and truth.
