102 undergraduate students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) were awarded the Link University Scholarship 2023/24 in recognition of their outstanding academic study and community service achievements. This year, 220 awardees were selected from more than 1,700 applicants from the 11 universities in Hong Kong, with CUHK students accounting for nearly half of them.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, expressed his sincere gratitude to Link Asset Management Limited. He said, “I am honoured to attend today’s ceremony and witness more than 100 CUHK students receive the Link University Scholarship for their diligence and commitment to serving society. I am very pleased with their performance and hope that all scholarship recipients will strive for opportunities to enrich themselves, broaden their horizons and become future leaders with a sense of social responsibility.”

Miss Chim Hiu-man was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which plagued her with frequent illness. It was not until she underwent surgery at the age of 4 that she returned to normal life. This experience made her realise the importance of good health and became interested in human biology, so she determined to become a doctor who could save lives and heal patients. She was admitted to the Medicine (MBChB) Programme of CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine in 2023 and is currently a Year 1 student. She said, “Beyond the pursuit of my dreams, I am committed to making a positive impact on society. I plan to establish a platform that provides guidance and support to secondary school students from humble backgrounds who share the dream of studying medicine. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations. By sharing my experiences, I hope to encourage these aspirational individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.”

Miss Fiona Ho Wing-sze, a year 1 student of the BA (Chinese Language Studies) and BEd (Chinese Language Education) programme, comes from a family supported by the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme. When she was in secondary school, many of her classmates improved their academic performance through tutoring services, to which she did not have access due to financial difficulties. Her score in the history mock test in Form 5 was only level 3, which greatly reduced her interest in studying the subject. Fortunately, her teacher encouraged her, telling her that “Your performances today are not equal to your performances in the future”. She worked hard to catch up in Form 6 and finally achieved excellent results in the HKDSE. Fiona’s dream is to be a teacher, making a difference in other people’s lives. After taking the HKDSE, she shared her learning experience and test-taking skills through social media, and provided free teaching services to secondary students in need. She hopes to inspire students from disadvantaged backgrounds to strive for the top and find their own path in life.
