CUHK statement in response to media enquiry
Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), gave the following statement to the media after attending the Inauguration Ceremony for Undergraduates 2016 today (5 September):
The rule of law is the cornerstone of Hong Kong. The Basic Law stipulates that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is against the notion of Hong Kong independence.
The University stands fast in upholding the principles of free speech and academic freedom. The Basic Law also confers upon Hong Kong residents the freedom of speech, of the press and of publication, as well as the freedom to engage in academic research. Members of the University have, without doubt, the freedom to engage in academic discussions on any topics. They should express their views through peaceful, rational, respectful and legal means, and take responsibility for their own words and deeds.
