HUI On Yu, Woody Phenomenological Design of Space through Dematerialisation We tend to experience our built environment through edges and shadows, yet we seldom question the essence of space itself. Through the act of “erasing”, this thesis project explores how space can be dematerialised into minimal sensual environments that challenge everyday perceptions, by transforming the Kowloon MTR Station as a design study.

WONG Fai Nam, Arthur A Wall to Connect: Activation of Residual Urban Fragments by an Inhabited Wall This thesis project explores the relationship between the wall and the city, and examines the potential of the wall as a permeable threshold to activate the residual fragments in our city, in this instance, an art warehouse in the East End of London.

LEONG On U, Derrick Crossing the Thames Barrier: Adaptive Reuse of Existing Infrastructure under Climate Change This thesis project investigates how adaptive reuse and architectural intervention can create a generative dénouement for expired infrastructure. It envisions a transformative renovation of the ageing Thames Barrier in London, which will be decommissioned by 2050 due to rising flood levels. By providing an afterlife for this existing infrastructure, the public can experience the impact of global climate change.

YUE Ka Hin, Jasmine The Paper Sanctuary: An Integrated Paper Recycling and Community Facility This project is situated in Kwun Tong at the intersection between residential and industrial areas. The thesis aims to introduce paper recycling and remaking back to the community, creating an authentic architectural experience to transform people’s mindset and neighbourhoods, while recognising the social value of rag-pickers in the industry.

The Master of Architecture Graduation Show XXII, organised by the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), will be held from 1 June to 9 June 2018, at Exchange Square, Central. Mr. Marvin Chen, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, along with other guests of honour from leading architecture firms, will officiate at the opening ceremony on 1 June (Friday). The second phase of the exhibition will take place at the AIT Building on CUHK campus from 11 June to 24 June. This year, with the exhibition theme of “Make Some Noise”, all the design panels and models on display address different issues in society, with the hope of raising awareness and eventually making a lasting, real-world impact on the environment.

Apart from showcasing design works of thesis of the 22nd graduating class of the CUHK Master of Architecture programme, this year’s Graduation Show also presents to the public the professional education offered by the CUHK School of Architecture and potential directions for architecture. In the exhibition, more than 40 individual thesis projects draw inspiration from a wide variety of topics, including housing, conservation, urban design, public infrastructure, traditional construction, architectural technologies and computational design.

“The thesis design projects exhibited are the ‘noises’ we make. Through this exhibition, we aim not only to have our voices heard and presence felt, but ultimately to encourage society to express its needs and aspirations. We believe architecture can be a driving force for real social change.” said Karen Kwok, President of the Graduation Show Committee.
