The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is committed to developing and nurturing future school leaders who can contribute to society through educational research and talent cultivation. With the generous support of The TUYF Charitable Trust (TUYF), the Faculty of Education of CUHK, the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) and CUHK’s Office for Greater Bay Area Developments (GBAO) co-organised the “Leadership for Future Schools” Advanced Training Programme from 22 to 27 July. A total of 40 outstanding principals and teachers from primary and secondary schools in Jiaoling County, Guangdong province gathered at the CUHK SZRI and CUHK campuses for a six-day workshop.

Professor Poon Wai-yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK, expressed her gratitude to a representative of TUYF for the foundation’s generous support of the programme. She emphasised that CUHK has been nurturing talents through high-quality education and research, preparing the next generation for future challenges and making meaningful contributions to the nation’s educational landscape. Professor Poon hopes that the programme will enable school administrators and teachers to broaden their horizons, gain an in-depth understanding of social development trends and insights into future changes in education, and provide students with high-quality learning experiences, so that they can better adapt to society and face future challenges.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Professor Fan Xitao, Dean of the Faculty of Education, emphasised the Faculty’s dedication to advancing education through the development of new tools, resources, pedagogical approaches and innovative projects based on empirical research. The Faculty strives to provide training for teachers, researchers and professionals, and nurture teachers and school leaders with regional and global perspectives. With the integrated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Faculty of Education promotes mutual learning and collaborative development between educators in Hong Kong and the Mainland.

In early 2024, the Guangdong Provincial Government unveiled a strategic initiative titled “Several Measures to Support Meizhou’s Integration into the Greater Bay Area for Accelerated Revitalisation and Development” to support the city of Meizhou’s integration into the modern industrial system in the GBA. Dr Lin Huangquan, Executive Director of the SZRI and Director of the GBAO, pointed out that the programme showcases CUHK’s achievement in the region. It provides valuable learning opportunities for leaders and teachers from grassroots schools, and offers a platform for exchanging and discussing ideas, injecting fresh vitality and momentum into educational cooperation and development between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

Jiaoling County Teacher Development Centre, which aspires to be a model of quality education in the area and to promote the high-quality development of basic education, actively engaged in the programme. Mr Tang Guozhu, Principal of Jiaoling Secondary School, said that the curriculum design of the programme was very detailed, and teachers were inspired and benefited from its concept and method of education management. Experts and scholars shared their research results and practical experience, providing new perspectives and ideas for principals and teachers.

The programme, offered by the Centre for Educational Research and School Improvement (CERSI) in the Faculty of Education, covers five modules: “Curriculum and Teachers in Change”, “Student and Curriculum Assessment in the AI Era”, “Learning-centred School Leadership”, “Evidence-based Education Improvement and Reform” and “Teacher Action Research”. Participants delve into educational development and innovation, gaining practical insights to apply in their future work.
