CUHK Library has installed a new Short Story Dispenser in its main lobby to promote literature and cultivate a culture of reading and writing on campus.

Users can choose from three categories – “English”, “Chinese” and “CUHK works” – and receive printed short stories, essays, poems or comics on a long strip of paper.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library has installed a new Short Story Dispenser in its main lobby to promote literature and cultivate a culture of reading and writing on campus. The state-of-the-art Short Story Dispenser, created by French publishing house Short Édition, offers a unique, innovative approach to promoting leisure reading. Users can choose from three categories – “English”, “Chinese” and “CUHK works” – and receive printed short stories, essays, poems or comics on a long strip of paper, allowing them to read printed works during brief moments of downtime.

The soft launch of the Short Story Dispenser took place on 30 August 2024. This novel dispenser showcases works from members of the CUHK community, including the winning entries from the esteemed Literary CUHK Essay Competitions. Additionally, it features selections from Short Édition’s expansive publishing platform and other renowned literary works. In tandem with the physical dispenser, CUHK Library has launched a Short Story Portal, offering online access to a plethora of literary works and ensuring that the joy of reading is readily available to all.

Embracing sustainability, the dispenser uses environmentally friendly paper that is BPA-free, recyclable and FSC certified. The use of thermal heat technology for printing eliminates the need for traditional ink or cartridges, aligning with CUHK’s commitment to eco-conscious practices. Users are encouraged to share the printed stories with others before responsibly recycling them.

CUHK’s University Librarian, Mr Benjamin Meunier, said: “The new Short Story Dispenser and online portal at the CUHK Library allow the university community to explore different stories in a more convenient and enjoyable way. We are excited to experiment with this innovative approach to sharing stories with them. Users can also take home ‘CUHK Works’ that showcase the talents of our students and faculty. We look forward to hearing feedback from the CUHK community and hope to extend this storytelling method beyond our campus, sharing Hong Kong literature and other works that resonate with readers.”
