CUHK Launches a New “CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Ph.D. Scholarship Scheme”for Outstanding Students to Pursue a Ph.D.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has announced the establishment of a new “CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Ph.D. Scholarship Scheme” to support students to study a Ph.D. at CUHK, after they have had to give up opportunities to study abroad because of the current pandemic and travel restrictions in various countries. The new scheme will be introduced in academic year 2020-2021. In addition to the studentships of HK$216,300 per annum within the normative study period, selected students will also receive an award of HK$80,000 to realise their study goals (HK$40,000 in the first year and HK$20,000 each in the second and third years of study, subject to satisfactory academic performance).
Interested students who are planning to pursue a full-time Ph.D. at CUHK in the academic year 2020-2021 and fulfil the following criteria are eligible to apply:
- Applicants should have excellent academic performance and obtain a minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or equivalent, and
- were being offered a full-time Ph.D. place in a top overseas university for the academic year 2020-2021, but may need to change their study plans due to the recent pandemic and travel restrictions.
Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Provost of CUHK remarked, “Nurturing future generations of academic and research leaders is part and parcel of what universities do. At CUHK, we aim to provide not only the needed support for our graduate students to excel in their work but also an environment that is conducive to personal development, an environment that will enable our students to flourish as individuals. This is the secret recipe, if you like, of our past successes in attracting top talents.”
Professor Anthony T.C. Chan, Dean of the Graduate School said, “With CUHK’s rich history and track record in rising to the needs of its time, the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Ph.D. Scholarship Scheme is broadened to cater for top students re-considering overseas graduate programmes for the welcoming and stimulating environment of our established local-global network of students and faculty.”
