The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC) recently launched “The Easy Climate-Friendly Diet” Exhibition. Officiating at the launch ceremony were the Environment and Conservation Fund Committee’s Chairman Dr Cheng Kam-chung and CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Rawlins. The exhibition will run until 29 July 2025.

This exhibition focuses on the interrelations between climate change and the food systems and encourages the community to decarbonise their diets to help Hong Kong transition into a carbon-neutral society. It features the results of a 24-month community engagement project, Environment and Conservation Fund The Easy Climate-Friendly Diet, supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund of the HKSAR government. The project recruited 46 students from 10 secondary schools, and the exhibition highlights how these students were trained to become “Young Climate Chefs” and learned how to create innovative and climate-friendly recipes. The exhibition also introduces the “Farm-to-Table Strategy” and principles for practising low-carbon diets, with the aim of persuading visitors to adopt climate-friendly lifestyles.

The Young Climate Chefs have recently demonstrated their skills by creating eight climate-friendly recipes (https://www.mocc.cuhk.edu.hk/zh-tw/ecf-the-easy-climate-friendly-diet) using sustainable approaches that minimise carbon emissions and water resource consumption. After public voting and a final assessment by a panel of expert judges, four schools emerged as winners of the “Greenicious Challenge”: Hong Kong and Kowloon Kaifong Women’s Association Sun Fong Chung College was the champion, while The Methodist Church HK Wesley College and CCC Chuen Yuen College were first and second runners-up, respectively. Pui Ying Secondary School won the Professional Jury Award. The achievements of these talented young chefs will be on show in this exhibition, with the aim of promoting sustainable eating habits and practices.

In his welcome address, Professor Nick Rawlins expressed his gratitude to the Environment and Conservation Fund for supporting CUHK and the MoCC’s community climate education work. He said that this work gave students the intellectual vigour to engage meaningfully with critical issues and helped to nurture future sustainability leaders. He hoped that this exhibition, along with the climate-friendly recipes designed by the talented Young Climate Chefs, would inspire us all to do more in our daily lives to combat the threat of climate change.

Dr Cheng said that the 24-month school-based and community engagement project “Environment and Conservation Fund The Easy Climate-Friendly Diet” aligns perfectly with the Environment and Conservation Fund’s objectives to raise public awareness and inspire action toward green living. They hope to attain major environmental sustainability targets, including carbon neutrality by encouraging ongoing engagement in policy-aligned initiatives and activities, paving the way for a greener future in Hong Kong.

The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change was established in December 2013 at CUHK. It is the first museum of its kind in the world. Among its various activities, it regularly organises interactive multimedia exhibitions, featuring valuable collections and providing information about climate change.
