The Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established the CUHK–JC MoCC Alumni Association on the International Museum Day 2017 (13 May).  The Association aims to join forces of the tertiary and secondary students to promote awareness of climate change in Hong Kong.  Since its establishment in December 2013, the MoCC has trained over 400 students as tour leaders of the Museum.  They include CUHK students as well as primary and secondary students recruited through the Internship Programme for Secondary School Students and the Green Pioneers Programme of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education.  The setting up of the alumni association will closely connect these students for information exchange and collaboration in promoting climate action and sustainable development in Hong Kong.

Officiating at the inauguration ceremony were Mr. Vincent Liu, Acting Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection; Prof. Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK; Ms. Vivian Lee, Senior Charities Manager of The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Prof. Ng Tai-kai, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education; and Mr. Wong Chung-po, Senior Curriculum Development Officer of the Education Bureau.

The award presentation ceremony of the ‘Eco Tour Photo Contest 2017’ and the opening of an exhibition of the winners’ works were held on the same day.  The Eco Tour is one of the extended educational activities of MoCC and is held every year from September to May.  Participants are guided by docents to visit various ecological attractions and green facilities on CUHK campus.  By experiencing the natural environment first-hand, it helps the participants appreciate the unique and delicate balance of nature.  The Eco Tour Photo Contest is now in its fourth year.  This year, nearly 240 entries were received, from which a panel of expert adjudicators selected the winners of each category.  The award winning works as well as some selected entries will be displayed at the MoCC from now until 29 August 2017.  The contest results can be viewed at the Gaia website: http://www.gaia.cuhk.edu.hk/mocc/ecotourphotocontest2017

Prof. Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK; Mr. Chow Wai-choi, Champion (Open Category) of MoCC Eco Tour Photo Contest 2016; and Mr. Samuel Tsui, President of CUHK Chung Chi Photography Society, presented the awards at the ceremony.

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia is a five-year community engagement programme, launched in 2012 by CUHK, with a generous donation of HK$70 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. In support of Gaia’s commitment to paving the way to a sustainable future for Hong Kong, the programme’s aim is to promote environmental conservation and sustainability in local communities through public education and carbon reduction partnerships with schools and non-governmental organizations.

The first of its kind in the world, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC), maintained by Gaia, is open to the public, with free admission. The MoCC showcases the ‘Three Poles’ (the North Pole, the South Pole and Mount Everest) collection of renowned Hong Kong explorer Dr Rebecca Lee, innovative research on the environment, energy and sustainability initiated by CUHK, and the Jockey Club’s initiatives to promote green living in the community.
