The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, the Global China Research Programme, and the Department of Government and Public Administration of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) co-hosted the ‘International Conference on Global Sustainability and the Belt and Road Initiative: Engaging the World from Hong Kong’ on CUHK campus recently to explore the opportunities and challenges in connection with sustainable development projects in the Belt and Road regions.

As a prelude to the conference, Professor Fanny M. Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor / Vice-President of CUHK, delivered the welcome message, which was followed by three thematic discussion sessions and a roundtable discussion session, which attracted about 100 attendees. Thirteen panelists took part in the three thematic discussion sessions to exchange their knowledge and views on various topics and make key suggestions on the following subjects: 1) Renminbi Internationalisation, Outbound Direct Investment, and Green Finance 2) Green Energy and Technology 3) Green Development and Sustainability.

The roundtable discussion session wrapped up the conference. In this session, key ideas and views were further elaborated upon and discussed. Comments were also made about various specific roles that Hong Kong can play in the Belt and Road Initiative by serving as a point linking China and the Belt and Road regions.

The participants made excellent comments and suggestions about further academic collaboration. The session ended with short closing remarks by Professor Ying-yi Hong, Co-Convenor of the Global China Research Programme.

The conference aimed to bring together scholars, think tanks and other stakeholders from the Belt and Road countries and regions to explore the opportunities and challenges from the Initiative and policy coordination in the areas of finance, energy, and sustainable development in the Belt and Road regions, with special emphasis on Hong Kong’s roles, functions, and contribution. It is hoped that through this conference, a research network in the Belt and Road regions can be built up to facilitate further research exchanges and collaborations in the future.
