CUHK holds 94th Congregation for the Presentation of Doctoral, Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees
Due to inclement weather, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has postponed its 94th Congregation for the Presentation of Doctoral, Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees, originally scheduled for 14 November, to today (17 November). The ceremony was presided over by Professor John Chai Yat-chiu, Chairman of the Council, while Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President, and Dr Carlson Tong Ka-shing, Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa, delivered addresses.
In his address, Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, stated: “I am delivering my final speech at the Congregation as the Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK. It has given me much privilege and joy to serve this esteemed institution over the past seven years, to witness your transformation and to see the University’s noble mission – to combine tradition with modernity and to bring together China and the West – shine brightly on both the national and global stages.” He encouraged the graduates to remember the qualities they cultivated at CUHK when facing challenges and setbacks, urging them to forge their paths towards excellence with purpose and responsibility, and to shape a bright future for their community, the country and the world.
Drawing from insights gained throughout his long career, Dr Tong shared three pieces of advice with the graduates that might prove useful as they embark on their own journeys. 1. lifelong learning: nurture a passion for the journey of learning and carry it through each stage of your career; 2. integrity: always stand firm against pressure to compromise your integrity; and 3. collaboration: maintain an openness to collaboration across industries, markets and borders. He said he hoped the graduates would keep learning, uphold their integrity and approach the world with a collaborative mindset.
