The Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Engineering organised the fifth Green Innovation Competition. The finals of the competition and the award ceremony were concluded recently. The competition aims to raise  environmental awareness among primary and secondary school students, providing them with exposure to green technology and encouraging the application of their knowledge in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics).

Professor Darwin Lau Tat-ming, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Associate Director and Project Director of CINTEC, said: “We are delighted that the competition has entered its fifth edition. When we first held the competition, the focus was on themes related to students’ own campuses. This year, we have embraced a broader theme of ‘Low-carbon Living’ to increase students’ awareness of environmental protection in their everyday lives.”

The competition was divided into two categories for primary and secondary school groups, attracting a total of 71 teams from 31 primary schools and 28 secondary schools. Teams were encouraged to showcase their creativity, technological knowledge, and skills to address environmental challenges related to “low-carbon living” in the community. In the preliminary round, teams submitted a two-minute video to present their ideas. After the selection by the judging panel, the top 10 teams from each category advanced to the finals, where they gave their all in a five-minute presentation and engaged in a Q&A session with the judges. Additionally, public was invited to participate in online voting to select the top three entries of the Most Popular Design Award in each category, attracting over 1,200 participants.

The award presentation was held on the same day. Tuen Mun Government Primary School was the champion in the primary school category with the project “Sowing Robot”, while United Christian College (Kowloon East) won in the secondary school category with their “Environmentally Friendly Outdoor Resting Area for Workers”. In the public voting session, CCC Chun Kwong Primary School and Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School won the first place of Most Popular Design Award in the primary and secondary school categories respectively, with their projects “Smart and Green Recycling Beverage Paper Pack Machine” and “AI Robocleaner”.

“This year’s competition was highly competitive, with each finalist team showcasing distinct strengths and impressive ideas. Regardless of winning an award or not, every students should applaud their efforts,” Professor Lau said. “The competition also included the Most Popular Design Award. Through public participation, we believe that creative ideas can be promoted to the wider public.”

The fifth Green Innovation Competition was funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund and was sponsored by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric (Hong Kong) Limited. The finals of the competition and the award ceremony were concluded on 6 July at the Hong Kong Science Park (Phrase 2). The competition aims to cultivate the scientific and technological innovation spirit and hands-on skills of local youth, improving their problem-solving abilities and fostering students’ interest in STEAM. This educational competition can help students experience the technological research and development process by producing videos and engineering logbooks, and sharing their ideas with other students.
