Organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Alumni Torch Fund, the first long-term alumni-initiated and alumni-founded foundation in Hong Kong, the CUHK Entrepreneur Day 2024 opened today at CUHK’s Yasumoto International Academic Park. Celebrating the event’s 10th anniversary, this year’s Entrepreneur Day, which lasts for two days (27 and 28 September), features a wide range of exciting activities. Highlights include entrepreneurship exhibitions, an interactive experience zone for entrepreneurial projects and one-to-one entrepreneurship consultation sessions, fostering dialogue among alumni, faculty members, students, industry players and investors. In addition, industry leaders will be sharing their insights on achieving business success and entrepreneurship in a series of keynote seminars.

Officiating guests attending the opening ceremony and thematic talk this morning included Mr Ivan Lee, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology; Mr Stephen Liang, Assistant Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council; Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Dr Rocky Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, and alumnus Raymond Chu, Associate Director of University Collaborations, HKSTP. Alumnus Peter Hung, President, Licensing and Branded Ventures of Forbes Global Media Holdings, delivered a keynote speech titled “Are you a Creator? – Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Trends”, exploring the latest developments of the industry and the market.

Mr Ivan Lee said in his speech: “I am delighted to see many teams from ITC’s Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) among over 40 exhibitors at today’s Entrepreneur Day.  Since the inception of TSSSU in 2014, we have provided funding support to 92 start-ups formed by teams from CUHK, with a total amount of about $81 million.  Some start-ups have successfully rolled out their products or services in the market, and subsequently generated considerable business revenue or attracted considerable private investment.  It is very encouraging to see such rewarding fruits.”

In his welcome speech, Professor Rocky S. Tuan said: “In the past decade, CUHK Entrepreneur Day has supported more than 500 start-ups founded by CUHK professors, alumni and students in showcasing their innovation and entrepreneurshipachievements. More than 300 outstanding CUHK alumni from various industries have served as speakers, judges, moderators, and mentors at the event. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated alumni of the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund for their commitment to organising the Entrepreneur Day over the past 10 years. Their efforts have not only fostered the development of our alma mater, but have also helped enhance the competitiveness and entrepreneurial ability of young alumni, demonstrating the spirit of CUHK’s alumni in giving back to the community. I am also deeply thankful to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, CUHK Entrepreneurs Alliance, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Cyberport and other organisations for their ongoing support. CUHK remains committed to contributing to the country and benefiting the society in the years to come.”

Celebrating a decade of success in the community

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of CUHK Entrepreneur Day, the University extended its activities to the community for the first time last month by organising the seven-day “CUHK Entrepreneur Day 10th Anniversary Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition: CUHK Innovations · Brightening the Future” at New Town Plaza in Shatin. Today’s opening ceremony featured highlights of the event, allowing attendees to revisit the exhibition and witness the significant milestones of CUHK Entrepreneur Day over the past 10 years. During the 10th anniversary luncheon today, university officials and friends celebrated this special milestone with enthusiastic alumni who have contributed as speakers, mentors of and investors in the event throughout the past decade.

Exhibition of over 100 alumni’s start-up achievements explores innovative opportunities

The two-day CUHK Entrepreneur Day features an exhibition with over 40 start-up projects from over 100 CUHK alumni, faculty members and students, covering artificial intelligence and robotics, biomedical technology, the Internet of Things and blockchain, social innovation and education. With an aim to enhance participants’ problem-solving abilities and innovative thinking, the newly introduced STEM workshops have received an overwhelming response. Additionally, the event also invited a number of renowned alumni, including entrepreneurs and professors with significant expertise in media, medicine and environmental protection, to deliver talks and share their entrepreneurial journeys, industry developments and market trends, providing participants with all-round innovation insight.
