Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the “CUHK Entrepreneur Day,” The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosts the “CUHK Entrepreneur Day 10th Anniversary Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition” (Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition) at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin from today (22 August) until 28 August. Under the inspiring theme “CUHK Innovations · Brightening the Future”, the exhibition showcases the remarkable research and entrepreneurial achievements of CUHK students, faculty and alumni. It offers the public a unique opportunity to experience how pioneering research is shaping the future. This exhibition kicks off a series of “CUHK Innovation and Entrepreneurship” events, including the “CUHK Entrepreneur Day” and “CUHK Innovation Day” which will be held on CUHK campus in late September.

The “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition” held its grand opening ceremony today. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong government, Professor John Chai, Chairman of the Council at CUHK and Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, along with Mr Christopher Kwok Kai-wang, Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited. The event was also honoured by the presence of Legislative Council members, influential professors and alumni in the field of innovation, as well as representatives from participating exhibitors, all of whom gathered to witness this significant moment.

The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, said, “Hong Kong’s talent development, innovative scientific research, and the commercialisation of research outcomes have made good progress over the past few years. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is committed to promoting closer collaboration among the research, academic and industry sectors, and to building a more vibrant industrial ecosystem.

“Nurturing talent is key to the development of innovation and technology as an industry. Looking ahead, I hope universities will groom more young people with research capabilities and an innovative spirit, who are passionate about technological development and the betterment of the community and the world. They will be the driving force in Hong Kong’s innovation and technology industry.”

Reflecting on the history of “CUHK Entrepreneur Day” in delivery of his speech, Professor Chai said: “As the ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ marks its 10th anniversary, we believe it is the right moment to share the University’s entrepreneurial achievements with the community. This large-scale public exhibition will not only highlight the milestones of the ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ over the past decade but also offer a platform for the public to learn more about CUHK’s startup ecosystem and to promote the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among the emerging generation of young people in Hong Kong.”

“The Hong Kong Government’s commitment to fostering a thriving innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem is truly commendable,” said Professor Tuan in his address. “Their unwavering support, evident in the promotion of entrepreneurial initiatives and the development of innovative talent, provides immense encouragement and a powerful boost to our efforts. With such support, CUHK has secured admission of six research centers into the InnoHK Research Clusters, and has secured funding for a leading seven research projects in the inaugural ‘Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+)’. Furthermore, I am deeply grateful to the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund for their continued support, which has elevated our annual Entrepreneur Day to a significant industry event. The unwavering solidarity of our CUHK alumni community is truly impressive and inspiring.”

Twenty-three exhibitors offer interactive showcase of innovative entrepreneurial achievements

Since 2015, CUHK has hosted the “CUHK Entrepreneur Day” annually, sponsored by the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, this year’s event has expanded beyond the campus for the first time, featuring an exhibition at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin. The exhibition highlights the latest achievements of CUHK faculty, students and alumni in innovation and entrepreneurship, enhancing public recognition of Hong Kong as a leading international innovation and technology hub in the Greater Bay Area.

The free public exhibition will run for seven days, showcasing 23 innovative teams from CUHK, including CUHK’s InnoHK research centres, RAISe+ projects led by esteemed professors, unicorn companies and startup ventures from the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute, alongside exceptional alumni projects. These exhibits cover cutting-edge fields such as medical technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and robotics. Visitors will have the chance to engage with innovative technological products, such as AI chess robots and text-generation robots. They can also immerse themselves in CUHK’s culture of innovation and entrepreneurship through interactive games and STEM workshops in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. Additionally, a “CUHK Entrepreneur Day Milestones” display will highlight key moments from the past decade of “CUHK Entrepreneur Day.”

CUHK is committed to advancing innovation and research development. To date, it has established six InnoHK research centres and five national key laboratories, while actively expanding research institutions in the Greater Bay Area to foster regional research development. Additionally, CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub (InnoHub) has successfully incubated over 90 startups, with four already progressing to the pre-unicorn stage. In line with the national development plan, CUHK has set up the CUHK Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Institute (Futian), as well as Beijing Centre and Shanghai Centre, aiming to contribute to the nation’s innovation and technological advancements and to promote comprehensive cooperation and communication.

About CUHK Entrepreneur Day

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has long been dedicated to fostering innovation and research. CUHK organises the “CUHK Entrepreneur Day” annually through the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund, with the aim of highlighting the entrepreneurial successes of its faculty, students and alumni. The event features entrepreneurship exhibitions, themed lectures, interactive displays, competitions and other activities, all designed to cultivate a vibrant entrepreneurial culture on campus. The 2024 “CUHK Entrepreneur Day” is scheduled to take place on 27 to 28 September on the CUHK campus.

About “CUHK Innovation Day”

Organised by the CUHK Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS), “CUHK Innovation Day” is an annual event held in September or October, showcasing the contributions and achievements of CUHK scholars, faculty, students and alumni in research and innovation. It brings together government officials, policymakers, research and innovation stakeholders, industry leaders and the CUHK community to create synergy, inspire innovation, explore collaboration opportunities and build partnerships.

The event features exhibitions, thematic lectures and panel discussions. Since 2023, it has also included livestream guided tours in Mandarin and guided tours for secondary school students. The 2024 “CUHK Innovation Day” will take place on 20 September on the CUHK campus with the theme of “clean energy”.
