The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s CW Chu College recently held a naming ceremony for its Feng Yu Building and David & Marina Chu Building. These two blocks of CW Chu College’s premises are named respectively in appreciation of an anonymous benefactor and to acknowledge the steadfast support of the Chu family, for the overall development of the College and continuous cultivation of the values embodied in its motto, Cultus et Beneficentia: leadership, service, intellectual clarity and ethical conduct.

Officiating at the naming ceremony were Professor Ambrose King Yeo-chi, former Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Ms Christina Chu and Ms Paulina Chu, daughters of the late Dr David Chu En-yue, the former Chairman of College Committee of Overseers; Professor Chan Wai-yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments) of CUHK and a former College Master; Professor Kenneth Young, Founding Master of the College; Professor Wong Suk-ying, Master of College. Over 130 guests attended the ceremony, including members of the Chu family, donors, Chu Scholars, College Fellows, College affiliates, College mentors, teachers, staff, parents and students.

Professor Wong expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the donors for their generous support of the whole-person education and the educational endeavours of the College. She also encouraged students to learn from the legacies of the late Dr CW Chu and Dr David Chu, pursue worthy goals and serve the community. In discussing general education, Professor Wong referred to three questions posed by Professor King: how to cultivate individuals with both intellectual excellence and moral virtue in an era of knowledge explosion; how to cultivate talent who are at the same time professionally specialised and broadly knowledgeable; and how to cultivate modern citizens who have both a global perspective and an appreciation for their own cultural heritage.

About the Feng Yu Building and the David & Marina Chu Building

The Feng Yu Building is situated at the centre of the College’s campus. The phrase “Feng Yu” is taken from the Analects (Chapter 11), in a passage recounting an exchange of ideas between Confucius and some of his disciples about life and philosophy. The name embodies lofty Confucian ideals and the close interaction between teachers and students. More information about the name can be found on the College’s website.

The David & Marina Chu Building is located on the right side of the College’s campus (as seen from the College Piazza) and was formerly named the Marina Tse Chu Building, in honour of the late beloved wife of Dr David Chu. When Dr David Chu passed away in November 2023, the College proposed renaming it as the David & Marina Chu Building in fond memory of the couple. Dr Chu’s passion for education and philanthropic spirit will always be remembered in the heart of the College community and beyond.

Launch of mentorship scheme and presentation of scholarships and certificates

On the same day, the College also launched the next cycle of the Mentorship Scheme and presented Scholarships and Certificates for 2024-25. The College successfully paired 20 mentors with students through the Mentorship Scheme. Professor Wong expressed her heartfelt thanks to the mentors for sharing their invaluable experiences, helping students to navigate their academic and future career paths, and broaden their horizons beyond the campus.

Additionally, Professor Wong expressed deep gratitude to the scholarship donors for their strong support, which enables students to strive for academic excellence, engage with the community and explore global exchange opportunities. This year, the College awarded over 135 scholarships and certificates to students in recognition of their outstanding academic performance, active participation in exchange and outreach activities, and contributions to the organisation of various college events.
