The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the re-appointment of Professor Chan Wai-yee, Li Ka Shing Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Professor Nicholas Rawlins, Master of Morningside College, as Pro-Vice-Chancellors of the University for a further period of one year; and Professor Anthony T.C. Chan, Master of Wu Yee Sun College and Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor of Clinical Oncology as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for a further period of three years, with effect from 1 August 2024.

The Council has also approved the appointment of Professor Yam Yeung as Master of Lee Woo Sing College for four years, with effect from 1 July 2024; and re-appointed Professor Zhou Lin as Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration for five years, with effect from 9 December 2024.

Professor Chan Wai-yee re-appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments)

Professor Chan Wai-yee obtained his B.Sc. (Hon. 1st Class) from CUHK in 1974 and Ph.D. from the University of Florida, USA in 1977. He subsequently held teaching positions at the University of Oklahoma and Georgetown University in the US. In June 2009, he became the Chair Professor and Founding Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. Currently he is also the Director of the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, CUHK, and Director of CUHK-BGI (Beijing Genome Institute) Innovation Institute of Trans-Omics. He served as Master of CW Chu College from January 2017 to June 2021, and was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments) of CUHK in August 2018 and Li Ka Shing Professor of Biomedical Sciences in May 2020.

His expertise is in the molecular genetics of human reproductive and endocrine disorders, developmental functional genomics and epigenomics of germinal stem cells, and non-coding RNAs in the differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). He also serves as Director for several joint laboratories including the CUHK-Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health Joint Research Laboratory on Stem Cell and Regeneration, CUHK-CAS Kunming Institute of Zoology Joint Laboratory of Bioresources and Molecular Research in Common Disease, and CUHK-Shandong University Joint Laboratory on Reproductive Genetics. He is a member of the Hospital Authority Board (2019 to present), a member of the Research Grant Council (2021-2024) and a member of the Board of Directors, Hong Kong Genome Institute (2020-2024). He is the President of the Hong Kong Institution of Science (2018 to present), and a member of the Shaw Prize Council (2013 to present).

Professor Anthony T.C. Chan re-appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Alumni Relations and Advancement)

Professor Anthony T.C. Chan joined CUHK in 1993 and is currently Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor of Clinical Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine and Master of Wu Yee Sun College. He served as Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Dean (External Affairs) and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Chan graduated from University College London in 1988, and received postgraduate training in the Royal Marsden Hospital, UK and a M.D. from CUHK in 1998. He is a pioneer in clinical oncology, especially in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and has published over 370 peer-reviewed papers.

Professor Chan is Director of the Hong Kong Cancer Institute, and the Sir YK Pao Centre for Cancer, Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Translational Oncology (CUHK), Chief Director of Phase 1 Clinical Trial Centre, CUHK, the Vice-President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, and Honorary Professor of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. He has been invited to give nearly 200 lectures, including the Sir David Todd lecture (2008), the Gerald Choa Memorial Lecture (2013) of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, and the Waun Ki Hong Memorial Lecture (2021) of Yonsei University College of Medicine, South Korea. Professor Chan was honoured with the 2023 ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for his leadership and outstanding research in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Professor Chan serves in a number of public positions. He is a member of the Cancer Coordinating Committee of the Health Bureau and member of the Expert Advisory Panel in Cancer of the Health and Medical Research Fund. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the HKSAR Government Security Bureau’s Admission of Quality Migrants and Professionals (2014-2020), and member of the Panel of Assessors (2014-2021) and member of the Education and Accreditation Committee (2011-2020) of The Hong Kong Medical Council.

Professor Nicholas Rawlins re-appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience)

Professor Nick Rawlins became Master of Morningside College in December 2018. He completed his B.A. and Ph.D. at University College, Oxford. He is a behavioural neuroscientist whose research spans areas including the neural basis of memory, brain degeneration, pain and anxiety. He has published widely in these fields, winning research support from the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council, and one of his studies of schizophrenia was awarded a Pfizer Prize for Psychiatry in 1999. He served on grants committees both for the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust, and from 2004-2007 was the Wellcome Trust Neuroscience Panel Co-Chairman.

He was appointed to a series of posts at Oxford, including Associate Head of Medical Sciences Division (Education) and Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience, before becoming Watts Professor of Psychology in 2005 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Development and External Affairs in 2010. He served on a wide range of college, faculty and central university committees at Oxford, including serving as Chairman of the Divisional Graduate Studies Committee from 2006 to 2008. On leaving Oxford in 2017, he became Vice-President (Development and International) of the Toulouse School of Economics. He is Emeritus Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Oxford where he also holds Emeritus Fellowships at University College and Wolfson College. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Professor Yam Yeung appointed Master of Lee Woo Sing College

Professor Yam has been affiliated with Lee Woo Sing College since 2011 and assumed the role of Associate Master soon after. He is a senior College Fellow, heading and serving numerous committees of the College, and has been the Acting College Master since February 2024. Professor Yam currently serves as the Director of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute and is a Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at CUHK. His research interests span AI, surgical robotics, computational control and smart manufacturing. He is actively involved in two CUHK InnoCenters at HKSTP, serving as Principal Investigator for the Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) and the Multi-Scale Medical Robotic Center (MRC). Since 2019, Professor Yam has led the CUHK Jockey Club AI-for-the-Future Project, aimed at fostering Hong Kong’s ecosystem for pre-tertiary AI education. Additionally, he heads two HKSAR Education Bureau projects focused on mainstreaming AI education and teacher training for secondary schools. Professor Yam has held several leadership positions at CUHK, including Chairman of the Department from 2004 to 2011 and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2018.

Professor Yam received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from CUHK, and his M.Sc. and Sc.D. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining CUHK, he was Member of Technical Staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA, USA. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Professor Zhou Lin re-appointed Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration

Professor Zhou Lin is the Dean of CUHK Business School and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Economics. He has a distinguished academic career of more than 30 years. He was an assistant and associate professor at Yale from 1989 to 1996, a tenured associate professor at Duke from 1996 to 2001, a WP Carey professor at Arizona State University (ASU) from 2001 to 2008, and a university chair professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) from 2008 to 2019. During his years at SJTU, he first participated in the founding of Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (2009-2010), and then led the development of Antai College of Economics and Management as dean for two consecutive terms (2010-2018).

Professor Zhou’s research interests cover some fundamental areas of micro-economic theory, including game theory, mechanism design, social choice and welfare. Much of his original work was published in leading economics journals, including Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior. In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship in economics. In 2009 he became the first Econometric Society Fellow elected from the Greater China region.
