CUHK and Wuling Motors Holdings Ltd sign MOU to join forces in advancing the automobile industry and building a smart campus

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Wuling Motors Holdings Ltd (Wuling) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 13 June 2024 to collaborate in innovative automotive research and development. They will put their joint efforts into training the relevant research personnel and applying the research achievements, bringing the technological development and business expansion of CUHK’s startups to the next level and helping to transform Hong Kong into an international technology and innovation centre.

The MOU was signed by Professor Chan Wai-yee, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments), and Mr Song Wei, Chief Executive of Wuling. The two parties will further discuss for cooperation in areas such as 3D visual inspection of automotive parts and driverless cars.

Under the MOU, the collaboration aims to fully integrate the scientific research and educational resources of the higher educational institution with the technical and industrial resources of the corporation, as well as transforming innovative research achievements into commercial products that serve the interests of the country and the public. CUHK’s T Stone Robotics Institute will  conduct in-depth cooperation with Wuling  in the fields of  personnel training, technology R&D, startup incubation, industry standard setting and social service in the automobile industry. Wuling will assist CUHK in developing a smart campus and introducing autonomous driving technology gradually to facilitate the campus life of teachers and students.

Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Provost of CUHK, remarked: “We are honoured to collaborate with Wuling to provide support and assistance to CUHK’s startups and entrepreneurs in the automotive industry. Given the growing global popularity of electric vehicles, CUHK hopes to build a smart campus by introducing autonomous driving, as well as developing more sustainable modes of transportation for a better future. CUHK will continue to cooperate with public and private organisations to make Hong Kong an international hub for innovation and technology.”

Mr Wei Ming-feng, Vice-President  of Guangxi Automobile Holdings Ltd and Executive Director of Wuling , said: “This collaboration represents a fusion of wisdom and strength. It also embodies the implementation of President Xi’s significant strategic directives for Guangxi, which aim to transform Guangxi into a crucial strategic hinterland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This collaboration is an active exploration to enhance scientific and technological innovation capabilities through strengthening cooperation and exchange with the Greater Bay Area. We look forward to jointly leveraging technological innovation resources, addressing development needs in the automotive field, undertaking joint technical research, cultivating talent, accelerating the transformation and industrialisation of scientific achievements, and together meeting new challenges and opportunities to create a better future.”
