The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) admitted, through JUPAS, 2,846 students who sat for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination and the intake this year is impressive.  99.2% of them were Band A students.  Building on the success in admitting the top student with the best HKDSE results last year, this year CUHK admitted 7 students with 5** in seven subjects, as well as 5 students with 5** in six subjects.  One of the students with 5** in six subjects will enrol in Architectural Studies, and the remaining 11 students (with 5** in seven or six subjects) will enrol in Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream).  Of all candidates who achieved Level 5** in five subjects or above in the HKDSE, territory-wide, around 50% were admitted by CUHK, and of all candidates who achieved Level 5** in one subject or above, around 40% were admitted to CUHK, representing the highest proportion amongst all JUPAS participating institutions.

In terms of the median admission scores of the best five subjects, four out of the top ten programmes/ streams among the JUPAS institutions in the territory are CUHK programmes, including Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), Global Business Studies, Medicine, and Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Science.  Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream) is the top programme with the highest median admission scores territory-wide for six consecutive years.

In terms of the admission scores achieved by individual JUPAS applicants in their best five subjects, five programmes/ streams at CUHK admitted students this year with a score of 35 (that is, Level 5** in 5 subjects). These programmes include Global Business Studies, Medicine, Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), Enrichment Mathematics, and Architectural Studies.

To encourage students with strong interests to build a solid foundation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science have jointly launched a STEM Talent Scheme for selection and admission of applicants with breadth and in-depth exposure and achievement in STEM.  For applicants taking the local HKDSE exam, “STEM talent” are those who have achieved in HKDSE at least “3 Stars” (e.g. Level 5*5*5* or 5**5*) in 3 STEM elective subjects.  The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science will be admitting 75 “STEM talent” this year, representing about a 25% increase from last year.

As a university that nurtures diversified talent for society, CUHK has been admitting students awarded Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarships, sports scholarships and/ or with school principals’ nominations every year.  The “Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship” was launched by HKSAR Home Affairs Bureau in 2015.  Through the scholarship scheme, local undergraduate students are awarded full-tuition fee scholarships by the government each year to study a bachelor degree in recognition of their achievements in non-academic areas such as sports, arts and/ or community service.  Among the roughly 40 annual scholarship quotas, CUHK has admitted this year 21 scholarship recipients.  The programmes admitting them include Chinese Language and Literature, Fine Arts, History, Music, Religious Studies, Professional Accountancy, Quantitative Finance, Physical Education, Exercise Science and Health, Medicine, Science, Psychology, and Sociology.
