CUHK Adds To University Admission Scholarships and Bursaries
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will add to University admission scholarships for JUPAS admittees and set up a new bursary scheme in 2017-18. These two steps can benefit students who have either an outstanding academic performance or financial needs.
On top of current scholarships, a study allowance of HK$20,000 will be given to JUPAS admittees with Level 5** in 6 or more subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). New students who have attained Level 5** in 3 to 5 subjects in HKDSE will be eligible for an additional scholarship of HK$10,000 for overseas exchange or outreach activities, and an admission scholarship of HK$5,000 will be given to students who have attained Level 5** in 2 subjects.
Along with this, a new bursary in a total amount of HK$1 million per year will be offered to 50 students with financial needs who demonstrate diligence in their studies.
University Admission Scholarships for JUPAS Admittees
Starting from 2017-18, JUPAS admittees with Level 5** in 6 or more subjects in HKDSE will be given a study allowance of HK$20,000, on top of a full-tuition scholarship and an exchange scholarship of HK$30,000. Both the study allowance and full-tuition scholarship are renewable up to the normative study period of the undergraduate programme, subject to good academic performance. That means the maximum total amount of a University admission scholarship will then be HK$402,600 for a 6-year medical programme, and HK$278,400 for a 4-year programme.
New students who have attained Level 5** in 3 to 5 subjects in HKDSE will be given, on top of the existing admission scholarships for which they are eligible, an additional scholarship of HK$10,000 for overseas exchange or outreach activities. Students admitted to CUHK with Level 5** in 2 subjects will be eligible for an admission scholarship of HK$5,000.
Professor Wong Suk-Ying, Associate Vice-President and Director of Admissions and Financial Aid of CUHK said, “We would like to give due recognition to those outstanding students who have striven hard to achieve good results in HKDSE. Both the number and total amount of University admission scholarships to be awarded based on HKDSE results will undoubtedly increase in the years to come. To encourage multi-faceted development in our students, we also offer admission scholarships to new students on the basis of their non-academic achievements.”

Applications will be assessed prudently according to the specific financial situation of individual applicants. Bursary recipients with ongoing financial difficulties may re-apply for the bursary in subsequent years of study.
“It has always been the University’s objective to help needy students. Through offering bursaries, we hope that these students can focus on their studies and at the same time be able to spare time to participate in other enriching experiential learning, so that they will not be deprived of a rich and diverse university life because of financial difficulties,” said Professor Wong.
