CUHK 55th Anniversary “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture SeriesCUHK Professor David Faure Gives the Sixth Lecture
Professor David Faure from the Centre for China Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), spoke on the topic “Filial Piety and Business Enterprise: Why is Filial Piety Good for Business” in the sixth lecture of “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series today (9 September). The lecture drew about 200 CUHK staff members and students, alumni, secondary school students and members of the public. Professor Faure talked about his experiences and achievements in his field of academic research. He had a fruitful discussion with the moderator and also took questions from the audience.
Professor Faure has been studying the history of the lineage of Southern China, Chinese business history, Hong Kong history and local history in China for years. In the historical context, investors of capital into business had to overcome two major problems. Firstly, the state had to recognise private ownership of capital. Secondly, debt liability had to remain valid beyond an individual’s life time. In Western countries, the emergence of company law dealt with those two problems so that the company might be recognised as a “legal person”. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, when China had no company law, through the interaction of the state and local society, the ancestor in Southern China remarkably stood in for the “legal person”.
Filial piety was recognised as a virtue. Professor Faure talked in his lecture about his view of the history of filial piety in China and why it was good for business.

To celebrate the 55th anniversary of CUHK, the University is conducting “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series which assembles the wisdom, strength and distinction of CUHK experts from across different disciplines and disseminates these in the community. The eight lectures cover various topics including translational medicine, artificial intelligence, food supply and sustainable agriculture, physics and the universe, history and psychology. Outstanding CUHK professors are presenting to the public their research experience and achievements and delivering abstruse knowledge in laymen’s terms.
