“Class Acts” CUHK Online Talk SeriesCUHK Professor Irwin Kuo Chin King Gives the Second Talk
The “Class Acts” CUHK Online Talk Series organised by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was successfully launched last Friday. It encourages students in ongoing learning at home and self-improvement by acquiring knowledge in various areas during the pandemic. Professor Irwin Kuo Chin King, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, today (25 March) spoke on the topic “A Traveler’s Guide to the 3-pound Universe” in the second talk to explore the mystery of the brain with CUHK students, staff members, alumni and members of the public, both local and overseas through the video conferencing platform Zoom.
The human brain weighs 3 pounds. As it has hundred billion of neurons and a complicated structure, the difficulty in exploring the brain is similar to exploring the universe. The brain is called the “3-pound universe” which attracts many scholars to spend their entire life exploring it. In the talk, Professor King told of his personal journey in exploring the universe of the brain. He also discussed what he has been working on in artificial intelligence, and how these topics would shape today and tomorrow. Professor King also responded to online questions from an overwhelming number of participants in the Q&A session.
The next talk will be given on 27 March 2020 by Professor Tingting Fan, from the Department of Marketing who will speak on the topic “Love at First Swipe: Innovations for Online Dating”.
About the “Class Acts” CUHK Online Talk Series
Eight online public talks are being given in simple terms, by CUHK scholars outstanding in their areas of expertise. The talks are free to the public, in particular local students and those from the Mainland and overseas.
The outstanding scholars from a number of faculties will give their views on their respective areas of expertise. The topics cover artificial intelligence (AI), gravitational waves, the application of robots in education for Special Educational Needs students, and the law of treasure hunting, amongst others.
