The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is committed to cultural diversity on campus and to encouraging interaction among students of different nationalities. Students from different cultures can learn from each other, and broaden their international horizons. The University has admitted a wealth of talent with around 600 non-local students this year. 

Many of these new students have achieved outstanding results in international and locally recognized examinations, such as IB, SAT, GCE A-Level and Taiwan GSAT.  As well as mainland China, Taiwan and Macau, the new students come from 26 other countries including India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, France, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom and Canada. For the first time, Brunei Darussalam, Colombia, Egypt, Estonia, Morocco, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan are seeing their students admitted to CUHK’s undergraduate programmes. 

Through the National Unified Universities and Colleges Entrance Examination System, 303 undergraduate students were admitted from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of mainland China. Some of them are from more distant places such as the cities of Kurele and Hami in Xinjiang, and Jiamusi in Heilongjiang. They are among the brightest students of their places of origin and they include 18 students from rural households and 22 ethnic minority students.  All of them arrived at CUHK on 19 August and joined the 8-day orientation activities. 

The intake of local students this year is also impressive. CUHK admitted, through JUPAS, 2,916 students who sat for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination. 99.8% of them were Band A students. Of all candidates who achieved Level 5** in one subject or above in the HKDSE, territory-wide, 34% were admitted by CUHK, including the only student in Hong Kong with 5** in seven subjects, and an additional 5** in the Mathematics Extended Module, who will enroll in Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), and five students with 5** in six subjects. 

For Non-JUPAS local students, CUHK admitted many top scorers including students attaining 44 and full score of 45 in the IB international qualification. These students were admitted to Medicine, Architecture, Biomedical Science, Global Business and other major programmes.  In addition, around 400 sub-degree holders were admitted to programmes with senior year entry.

Karlygach Kainazarova
Karlygach decided to move from Kyrgyzstan to Hong Kong for its location, competitiveness and economic status in the world. She was given the National Award as she was the 2nd runner-up in the University Entrance Exam of Kyrgyzstan. She feels honoured to be awarded a scholarship by CUHK to study Integrated Bachelor of Business Administration. Karlygach hopes to make friends from different majors and enjoy a vibrant university life through the unique college system.           

Abdalla Mohamed Salama Sayed Moustafa
Abdalla was born in Cairo. He moved to Germany, with his family, where his father was pursuing further studies. His experiences in Germany inspired him to set a goal of studying abroad in a metropolitan city which has a rich blend of cultures. Abdalla chose to study Engineering at CUHK because he was attracted by the University’s teaching excellence and achievements in research.  He wishes to learn from the talents of others through the mutual exchange of ideas and discussion, and to enjoy the fruitful university life at CUHK over the coming years.             

Aleksander Vaeaer
Aleksander is from Estonia and looks forward to his perspectives being broadened through a university education at CUHK. His family and friends were surprised that he had decided to leave his home country to study halfway across the globe. He was attracted by CUHK’s forward-looking educational policy, international reputation, and the curriculum characteristics of the flexible credit unit system.  Aleksander was also impressed by the hospitality and enthusiasm of CUHK teachers and students. He aspires to work in business for the benefit of the community at large after graduation.
