2010 Ch’ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture, New Asia CollegeThe Chinese University of Hong KongAll are Welcome
Professor Bell Yung, Professor of Music, University of Pittsburgh will chair the 2010 Ch’ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture, New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 10-16 March 2010 with the theme “Celebrating the Literary, Dramatic, and Musical Masters and Masterpieces of Hong Kong”. Three public lectures will be held during the period. The public is welcome to join these lectures.
Professor Bell Yung is Professor of Music at the University of Pittsburgh. He has also taught at the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of California at Davis, and Cornell University. He is a recipient of numerous honors and fellowships including the Guggenheim, Mellon, Ford, ACLS, NEH, Fulbright, and Chiang Ching Kuo. In Hong Kong, he has received support from the Research Grants Council, Arts Development Council, Kwan Fong Foundation, Bei Shan Tang Foundation, and Mrs. Lee Ka Shing Fund. A specialist in the music of China, his most recent books and articles are: The Last of China’s Literati: The Music, Poetry and Life of Tsar Teh-yun (2008), Music and Cultural Rights (2009), The Flower Princess, A Cantonese Opera (2010), “Voices of Hong Kong: the Reconstruction of a Performance in a Teahouse” in Critical Zone No. 3 (2009), “Peking Opera and Regional Operas” in Encyclopedia of Modern China (2009), “Historical Legacy and the Contemporary World: UNESCO and China’s Qin Music in the 21st Century” in Music and Cultural Rights (2009), and “Tsar Teh-yun at Age 100: A Life of Qin Music, Poetry and Calligraphy” in Lives in Chinese Music (2009). He has also published in Chinese academic journals, and edited and/or produced videos and museum catalogues.
Professor Bell Yung was born in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong. After graduating from Wah Yan College Kowloon, he went to the U.S. for higher education, receiving a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of California at Berkeley, a Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Music from Harvard University.
