A total of 105 undergraduate students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have been awarded the Link University Scholarship 2024/25, in recognition of their outstanding academic and community service achievements. This year, 220 awardees were selected from over 1,700 applicants across 12 universities in Hong Kong, with CUHK students accounting for nearly half of them. Five CUHK students received the scholarship for the fourth consecutive year.

Professor Nick Rawlins, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) said: “It’s not just very special but also challenging to be the first generation in a family ever to go to university – both for the students and for their families. What a great choice for Link to focus their support on this exceptional group and recognise those individuals who combine academic excellence and social commitment. I’m delighted to be here to take part in this award ceremony, to thank them and to celebrate – and meet – such an outstanding group of students.”

Medical student promotes social inclusion at Special Olympics

One of the awardees, Kelvin Yung Wing-chun, a third-year student in the Medicine (MBChB) programme at CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine, has been actively involved in voluntary work since his secondary school days, driven by the belief that “it is more blessed to give than to receive”. Kelvin aspires to become a doctor after graduation, using his professional expertise to help those in need. Recently, he served as an “Unified Partner” at the “2023 Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Summit in Berlin, Germany”, assisting athlete leaders  with intellectual disabilities in expressing their opinions and sharing ideas. “Explaining sustainable development topics to over 100 participants from around the world was not an easy task,” he said. “To make complex concepts more accessible, my partner and I used visual aids, such as printed symbols, to simplify the ideas and the way to implement sustainable development.” He hopes to leverage the scholarship to participate in more social welfare and humanitarian work in the future, helping different groups of people to make the most of their strengths and promoting social inclusion.

Business student champions arts and community engagement

Another awardee, Stella Chen Sin-yu, a fourth-year student in the Integrated Bachelor of Business Administration programme (Global Business Studies Stream) at CUHK’s Business School, has a deep passion for music, mastering the violin and viola at a young age. Stella is also enthusiastic about participating in social services related to the performing arts. Last year, she assisted the Hong Kong Arts Festival in organising outreach activities, supporting its Young Friends programme, which helps secondary school and university students learn about diverse performing arts. “Music not only helps people relax and inspires creativity but also nurtures character. I hope to participate in more music- and arts-related charitable initiatives in the future, and to raise public interest in artistic creation and appreciation, integrating art into everyday life and promoting its diverse development,” she said.
