The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held the “CUHK – Yangpu Week and CUHK Shanghai Centre 1st Anniversary Ceremony” today (8 September) in Yangpu District of Shanghai. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, led a delegation comprising Provost Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Strategic Developments) Professor Chan Wai-yee, faculty deans and senior administrators to attend this grand event. It marked the admission of the first five knowledge transfer projects at the Shanghai base of CUHK InnoPort (Innoport@Shanghai), and the inauguration of the representative office of CUHK Office of Admissions and Financial Aid in Shanghai. The delegation also met with officials of the Yangpu District Government, as well as strategic partners in Shanghai including Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and SenseTime, signing cooperation agreements and undertaking in-depth exchanges.

The occasion officially launched the “CUHK – Yangpu Week”. Attended by officials from Yangpu District, the CUHK delegation and CUHK alumni from the Yangtze River Delta region, it celebrated the first anniversary of the CUHK Shanghai Centre, and the inauguration of the CUHK Office of Admissions and Financial Aid in Shanghai, with the latter providing updated information for students interested in applying to CUHK.

Wang Hao, Deputy Mayor of Yangpu District, Shanghai, warmly welcomed the CUHK delegation. He said: “Since the establishment of the CUHK Shanghai Centre last year, Yangpu District and the University have been co-establishing the CUHK Innoport@Shanghai, promoting a deep integration of technology and industrial innovation, and mutual advancement in talent cultivation. Looking forward, we will collaborate closely with CUHK to drive the integrated development of education, technology and talent. This partnership will foster technological innovation, nurture innovative talent, and set a new standard for Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation. We will forge a fresh narrative of collaboration, highlighting the concept of ‘universities of the cities, cities of the universities’ and shaping a vibrant Shanghai-Hong Kong alliance.”

Professor Tuan said in his speech: “Looking ahead, I hope the CUHK Shanghai Centre will continue to maximise resources from both regions to provide training and exchange opportunities for entrepreneurs, scholars and students from Shanghai and Hong Kong, encourage interdisciplinary research collaboration, and establish a platform for government, universities and enterprises to synergise. I believe the Centre will contribute to the high-quality development of our country, as well as Shanghai and Hong Kong.”

CUHK also announced that the first batch of five knowledge transfer projects has officially landed at Innoport@Shanghai. The projects are:

  1. Highly accurate and efficient analytical tools for medical services;
  2. Next-generation customised flexible wearable rehabilitation exoskeletons and brain-machine interface technology;
  3. A fully automated microrobotic in vitro diagnostic platform;
  4. Gastrointestinal and endoscopic robots;
  5. Network coding.

The event also saw CUHK and Yangpu District unveiling a series of collaborative initiatives, including Shanghai internships for Hong Kong students, a landmark design competition for Daxue Road West in Shanghai, preparation seminars for the listing of digital economy enterprises and more. The CUHK Education and Innovation exhibitions, launching on the same day, demonstrate CUHK’s education excellence and provide information on university programmes and current educational trends, and serve as a platform for collaboration and communication within innovation communities in Shanghai and Hong Kong, stimulating cross-border cooperation and enhancing entrepreneurship in both regions.

The delegation embarked on a four-day visit to Shanghai starting from 7 September, engaging in deep exchanges with partner universities and research enterprises in the city, and signing cooperation agreements, including a dual-degree programme in Financial Technology and Finance with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Professor Tuan shared CUHK’s latest developments with Shanghai alumni in an alumni dinner.

Professor Tuan said: “This visit is important for the collaboration between CUHK and Shanghai. With the support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Yangpu District Government, CUHK alumni and partners from all sectors, the CUHK Shanghai Centre and Innoport@Shanghai have achieved significant milestones in Shanghai. They have played a pivotal role in enhancing interactions between universities and enterprises in Shanghai and Hong Kong, cultivating top-tier talent and commercialising outstanding research-academia-industry collaboration projects. CUHK is committed to integrating into the national development plan, furthering our development strategy on the mainland, enhancing cooperation with mainland counterparts, and collectively progressing in talent development, technological innovation and education, for the benefit of the global community.”
