Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a delegation of CUHK’s senior management team to visit Beijing and Shanghai from 25^th to 29^th August, 2023. The delegation, which comprised Professor Alan K.L. Chan, Provost of CUHK, Professor Chan Wai-yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments) of CUHK, Professor Sham Mai-har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of CUHK, senior administrators, as well as College Heads and Masters, visited Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and other strategic partners in Beijing and the Yangpu District in Shanghai, signing multiple collaboration agreements and engaging in in-depth discussions with partners such as the Shanghai Knowledge and Innovation Community in the Yangpu District, Sunmi Technology Co. Ltd. and Douyin Group. During the visit, CUHK also unveiled the CUHK Shanghai Centre, the Shanghai base of the CUHK InnoPort, and the research centre of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai. This year, the University has established six new mainland bases to promote industry, academic and research collaborations, building a strong network of scientific and technology innovation facilities across the whole country.

This visit holds significant importance for the University’s collaborations with Beijing and Shanghai. On 25^th August, CUHK participated in the inauguration ceremony of the National Torch Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Zhongguancun) as a founding partner. It will spearhead the establishment of a special branch of the Academy in Hong Kong. The CUHK delegation was also invited to the inaugural High-level Talent Highland Forum and several important activities in Beijing. On 28^th August, CUHK invited leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Yangpu District and partner universities in Shanghai, and alumni from the Yangtze River Delta region to the opening ceremony of the CUHK Shanghai Centre, an occasion marking a major milestone in the collaboration between Hong Kong and Shanghai. The ceremony saw the signing of the “Shanghai Yangpu District People’s Government–The Chinese University of Hong Kong Strategic Collaboration Framework Agreement” and the unveiling of the Shanghai base of the CUHK InnoPort (InnoPort@Shanghai). During his visit to Shanghai, Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, participated in the CUHK’s 60^th Anniversary Dinner organised by the Shanghai Alumni Association to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the University with alumni in the Yangtze River Delta Region.

The CUHK delegation also had substantial exchanges with universities and research enterprises in Shanghai. They visited Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), renewing the “Agreement on the Shanghai-Hong Kong Development Institute” with the former, as well as the “Agreement on the CUHK-SJTU Joint Research Centre on Medical Robotics” and the “Agreement on the CUHK-SJTU Joint Research Centre in Diabetes Genomics and Precision Medicine” with the latter. Several new collaboration agreements were signed, including the “CUHK-Fudan University Joint International Financial Research Centre Agreement” and the “Collaboration Agreement on CUHK-SJTU Dual Degree Programmes”. Another focus of the visit was the unveiling of the research centre of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai. In addition, the delegation engaged in in-depth discussions on research and development, talent cultivation and industry-academia-research cooperation with renowned scientific research enterprises and organisations such as the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Sunmi Technology Group Co. Ltd. and Douyin Group, aiming to deepen the University’s connection with industry and research organisations.

Thanks to the support of the Beijing Municipal Government, the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Yangpu District Government, the alumni community and friends from all sectors, CUHK has been able to make tremendous progress in establishing innovative facilities across the country. With the establishment of the National Torch Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Zhongguancun) by CUHK as a founding partner, that of the CUHK Shanghai Centre, InnoPort@Shanghai and the research centre of the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Shanghai, alongside the opening of the CUHK Beijing Centre in June, CUHK has set up six new bases nationwide this year. These bases are located in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, aiming to enhance co-operation among the government, industry, academia and research sectors. Together with over ten existing facilities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as future development plans, we are building a strong and robust mainland network. As the University strides confidently into the next decade, it will continue to integrate actively into the national development and advance its latest strategic plan, CUHK 2025, and strategies for mainland development. We look forward to deepening our work with mainland partners to promote talent cultivation, scientific innovation, and education so as to build a more prosperous and innovative society together.”
